Queens University of Charlotte invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Founded in 1857, Queens is a private, co-ed, Presbyterian-affiliated comprehensive university with a commitment to both liberal arts and professional studies. Located in the heart of historic Charlotte, Queens serves approximately 2,500 undergraduate and graduate students through its College of Arts and Sciences, the McColl School of Business, the Presbyterian School of Nursing, the Wayland H. Cato, Jr. School of Education, the School of Communication, and Hayworth College for Adult Studies.
Ranked #23 among Southern Master’s Universities by US News and World Report, Queens currently has five North Carolina Professors of the Year on its faculty, more than any other college or university in the state. With a very high level of student engagement, Queens and its 109 full-time faculty provide the students with opportunities for growth both inside and outside the classroom. In addition, more than 90 percent of all traditional undergraduate students study and travel abroad through the University’s renowned John Belk International Program.
Summary of Position:
Serving as the chief academic officer for the University, this position is responsible for leading the Academic Affairs team in the planning, development, coordination, review, and administration of undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as all other aspects of academic life at Queens. Reporting to the President, the Vice President for Academic Affairs serves as the primary representative and advocate for the faculty within the administration and is the ranking university officer who acts in the absence of the President. S/he is a member of the Senior Leadership team and a liaison to the Board of Trustees.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Serve as an advocate for the faculty in matters of curriculum, policy, program development, allocation of resources, etc. within the University.
· Work closely with and support the deans and the faculty in accreditation, program development, and continuous improvement in the quality and vitality of existing programs.
· Participate in strategic planning activities of the University in areas specifically affecting academic programs, policies, budget, and overall university policies and goals.
· Administer academic programs in association with the Deans; monitor existing programs and develop new academic programs in cooperation with the appropriate curricular and planning committees.
· Oversee the appointment and development of faculty and academic staff.
· Serve as a liaison with internal and external constituencies, such as the Board of Trustees, administration, faculty, staff, alumni, students, and parents.
· Analyze fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify, and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds.
· Serve as a member on committees as required.
· Represent the President on the campus and in the community as necessary.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directly or indirectly supervise the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, the deans of the College of Arts and Sciences, the McColl Graduate School of Business, the Presbyterian School of Nursing, the Cato School of Education, the School of Communication, and the Hayworth College for adult studies; the Registrar, the Director of the Library, the Director of the Center for Academic Success, the Director of Academic Advising, the Director of Institutional Research and Assessment, and immediate staff.
Education and Experience:
· Earned doctoral degree and 7 – 10 years of experience showing an advancing record of achievement in both the academic and administrative realms.
· Has the qualifications necessary for appointment as a tenured full professor, with a strong academic record and a commitment to both liberal arts and professional studies.
· Demonstrated success as a senior-level administrator in higher education, including proven ability to provide visionary leadership.
· Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service.
· Demonstrated success in developing and managing diverse teams and in championing diversity at all operating levels of the University.
· Preferred: Demonstrated effectiveness in providing leadership to develop funded research, sponsored programs, grants, and contracts.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· Exceptionally strong communication skills (verbal, written, interpersonal) and ability to quickly establish and maintain strong rapport at all levels of the University.
· Ability to read, analyze, and interpret reports and legal documents.
· Ability to effectively make presentations to the administrative team, internal and external constituents, and the Board of Trustees.
· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated skill in prioritizing multiple competing tasks and demands.
· Skills and experience in strategic planning, academic program development, fiscal planning, and resource management.
· Proven ability to hire, train, develop, and lead high performing teams.
· Ability to define, analyze, and resolve problems.
· Ability to understand financial reports and data.
· Strong networking and social relationship building skills.
· Flexible, energetic, creative, and results-oriented.
