West Dunbartonshire 2014 Sports Awards
Overview
The West Dunbartonshire Sports Awards provides the opportunity to thank coaches, volunteers and athletes for their dedication, and also to recognise their achievements.The time period that you should base your nomination on is: 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2014.
Nomination Criteria
- The closing date for nominations for the 2014 awards will beMonday 7h April
- Candidates for awards must be a resident in West Dunbartonshire and / or represent a West Dunbartonshire based club.
- Nominations will be considered from individuals or teams participating in a sport, with a club, whose governing body is recognised by sportscotland.
- All coaching nominees must hold a recognised governing body of sport coaching qualification
- With the exception of the Service to Sport award, all awards are judged on the basis of a sports person or team’s achievements from April 2013 to March 2014; please do not include details of achievements in previous years.
- A person may be nominated for an individual award and be a member of a team which has been nominated for the team award.
- All nominations will be vetted and then put to a public vote
- Following the public vote, the top three nominees in each category will have their achievements considered and judged by the Judging Panel.
- Judging of nominations in all categories will be carried out by a specially selected panel. All decisions of the selection panel will be final.

Awards criteria and evidence
- Young Person’s Coach 2014
This award will be made to a coach who has made an outstanding contribution to the introduction and early development of sport for young people under the age of 18.
Evidence
- Delivered regular high quality coaching sessions for children under the age of 18
- Contributed to the physical and social development of young athletes and/or a young team
- Created a safe, fun and nurturing environment for young people
- Community Coach 2014
This award will be made to a coach who has supported the development of athletes or teams, who are in the main over the age of 18, and who has made a significant impact on the participation levels of people taking part or staying in sport.
Evidence
- Significantly increased the sporting opportunities for people in their community
- Delivered regular high quality coaching sessions to a group or to individual athletes
- Created a safe and enjoyable environment for participation and development
- Development Coach 2014
This award will be made to a coach who, by using a player-centred approach, has ensured that athletes or teams with emerging talent have made an impact at district, regional or national level.
Evidence
- Adopted a player-centred approach to coaching
- Responsible for identifying and nurturing talent in line with the sport’s long term player development model
- Coached athletes or teams who have made an impact at district, regional or national level that may include a significant improvement in performance, although not necessarily the winning of titles
- Disability Sport Award 2014
This award category will recognise the success and impact of a coach, volunteer or participant in the field of disability sport in West Dunbartonshire. The award looks for evidence of an individual’s key involvement in supporting the delivery of quality sporting opportunities for disabled people. The award will also recognise participant’s dedication to their sport.
Evidence
- Deliver a player centred approach to coaching
- An inspiration and positive role model for participants and peers
- Given up a substantial amount of time to volunteer in disability sport
- Athlete – information on awards , PBs, performances, accomplishments or competitive results denoting achievement
- Young Coach 2014
This award will be made to a coach aged 25 years or younger in recognition of their achievements to date. This award looks for young coaches who have invested in their development as a coach and have made a significant impact on the people they coach.
Evidence
- Has helped their athletes or team reach their potential by dedicated support
- Has invested time and energy in their development as a coach, undertaking continuous professional development opportunities.
- Has demonstrated innovative practice in their coaching
- Volunteer Award 2013 (over 25 yrs)
This award will be made to a volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to their club/school, in recognition of their commitment this year.
Evidence
- Worked in any aspect of their club/school – without them the club/school would not be the same
- Committed a substantial amount of personal time to volunteer in sport and support the development of others
- An inspiration and positive role model for participants and peers
- Young Volunteer Award 2013 (under 25 yrs)
This award will be made to a volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to their club/school, in recognition of their commitment this year.
Evidence
- Worked in any aspect of their club/school – without them the club/school would not be the same
- Given up a substantial amount of time to volunteer in sport
- An inspiration and positive role model for participants and peers
- Technical Official 2013
This award recognises the hard work and dedication that referees, umpires and match officials make to the competition structure of their sport.
Evidence
- Demonstrated commitment to officiating in their sport
- Officiated at local, regional, national or international level
- Invested time and energy in their development as an official, undertaking continuous professional development opportunities
- Team of the Year
This award will recognise the high quality achievements of a club and or team over the last year. Nominations within this category are expected to reflect such things as how a club or team have achieved excellent performance results, overcome barriers to achieve goals, achieved a level of quality accreditation in terms of their development, expanded their sessions to support a wide range of participants etc.

- Information on performances, accomplishments and or competitive results
- Quality Accreditation (e.g. Quality Club, Quality Mark Award)
- Detailed information on club development and/or increased opportunities for participation in sport
- Junior Sports Person 2014 (under 18 years)
This award will recognise a high performing junior. The award looks for evidence that the previous year was a success for the performer
Evidence
- Information on awards, PBs, performances, accomplishments and/or competitive results denoting achievement
- National Governing Body recognition, attendance at regional and national training squads and dedication to training as well as competition schedule
- Senior Sports Person 2014 (18 years and over)
This award will recognise a high performing senior athlete. The award looks for evidence that the previous year was a success for the performer
Evidence
- Information on awards, PBs, performances, accomplishments or competitive results denoting achievement
- National Governing Body recognition, attendance at regional and national training squads and dedication to training as well as competition schedule
- Services to Sport
The award is made to an individual who has displayed outstanding dedication to sport in West Dunbartonshire over a prolonged period of time. This award is open to any individual who has shown dedication to sport i.e. committee members, coaches, volunteers, grounds staff etc.
Evidence
- A minimum of 15 years’ service to sport that has widened participation opportunities, assisted the development of local athletes and enhanced the sporting infrastructure in West Dunbartonshire.
