COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course covers the operation and maintenance of specialized turfgrass management equipment. Topics include small engine use and repair; operation, maintenance, and repair of turfgrass management equipment; orgainzation of shop areas; and safety considerations. Upon completion, students should be able to operate and maintain turfgrass management equipment.

CORE COMPETENCIES:

Make up Exams and Assignments only if previously excused by instructor. As a rule, No make ups.

GRADING SCALE:

A = 90 - 100

B = 80 - 89

C = 70 - 79

D = 60 - 69

F = Below 60

ATTENDANCE:

A student may miss two class meetings without any grade consequence. Each class meeting missed (absence) in excess of the two will result in a deduction of 5 points off of the student’s final grade (100 scale) for the semester.

Additionally, two class tardies will be counted as one absence

Regular class attendance is required to remain entitled to financial aid and Veterans’ Benefits. Faculty are required to report irregular attendance to the College which may result in the loss of benefits. Failure to attend class and/or withdrawal from class may impact your financial assistance. FACULTY EXPECTATIONS – WORKPLACE SKILLS

Arriving to class on time & prepared is an expectation in the work place and required in all classes as well.

The Horticulture & Turfgrass Industries work outdoors, often in inclement weather (hot, cold, wet & dirty). Appropriate dress for the Green Industry readiness for all classes, labs and field trips is required. When there is a potential to operate equipment or work in the greenhouse, additional safety clothing may be required.

Professional and safe conduct in class, labs and field trips is expected at all times.

Tobacco products are not to be used during class, lab or field trips.

Use of any electronic device in the classroom, labs, or field trips, including but not limited to audio and video recording devices, is prohibited, unless the student using the device has the specific permission of the faculty.

Cell phones, pagers, blackberries and other wireless devices are to be turned off and removed from public view upon entering the class. If you have a situation that requires that your electronic device be left on, discuss with instructor before class starts.

Computers may be utilized only as directed by the faculty, and all computer use is subject to monitoring by the faculty at all times. This policy applies to both classroom/lab computers and personal computers belonging to the student brought into the classroom.

Under no circumstances are electronic devices allowed in the classroom during tests/exams.

ASSIGNMENTS:

Attached is a Tentative schedule that lists the planned lectures and activities. Should the calendar change for any reason, you will be notified by your instructor. Students are expected to adhere to the schedule and any announced modifications.

All assignments are due before the class begins. Late assignments will be accessed a penalty of 5% per day they are late. No assignments will be accepted beyond 10 days of the due date.

WITHDRAWALS AND INCOMPLETES:

While withdrawing from a course is sometimes necessary, it is advisable to discuss this with the instructor before withdrawing. INCLEMENT WEATHER / CANCELLED CLASSES:

The College may be closed or classes cancelled due to inclement weather or other emergencies. The decision to close the College or cancel classes will be made by the President or another administrator designated by the President. Such actions will not always coincide with announced closings of local public schools, other local colleges, or local business entities.

When the college is to close or classes are to be cancelled, prompt notice will be given to local radio and television stations so that announcements can be made. When the college closes, all classes at all locations (including clinical) are cancelled. When local schools close, all CPCC classes in those schools are cancelled. Late openings will start with classes normally taught at that hour.

In the event a class has to be cancelled on short notice, if possible, the students will be notified via CPCC e-mail. A notice will also be put on the classroom door indicating that class has been cancelled.

HOW TO REACH CAMPUS SECURITY:

There is a telephone in each classroom. Should a situation arise that requires campus security, fire, police, or ambulance, call 6911. Do not call 911 directly. Once you call 6911, Campus Security will immediately notify emergency personnel and give them detailed directions to the emergency situation.

Service Learning Project

Students are required to complete 10 hours of outside the classroom service learning at the Northridge Middle School athletic fields during the semester. Students are required to keep a log of the hours that they worked and tasks performed. At the end of the semester the student will present a presentation to the class about their service learning accomplishments.
