Summary
The Veterinary Surgeon’s role is to assist the Veterinary Director (VD) and Deputy Veterinary Director (DVD) in supporting the Rehoming Centre veterinary practices to provide an excellent standard of care to the dogs in our care whilst maintaining an objective and pragmatic approach. He/she will also provide support for the Shared Adoption Scheme and offer veterinary advice as and where required within Dogs Trust and externally. It is anticipated that the post holder will also take ownership of some projects. This role is primarily based in our London office; however some travel will be required.
Duties
Reporting to the Deputy Veterinary Director the successful candidate will need:
·  To liaise closely with Centre veterinary practices, first opinion and out of hours providers (primarily within normal working hours)
·  To assist the visiting of each Rehoming Centre at least twice a year to monitor veterinary procedures and the health and welfare of the dogs;
·  To provide input and monitoring of the Shared Adoption Scheme (SAS) and work alongside the SAS Co-ordinator to manage the ongoing review and development of the scheme;
·  To provide communication and facilitation of referrals for dogs and liaise with the relevant parties;
·  To provide input and monitoring of the Emergency Fund;
·  To provide veterinary input into the Hope and Freedom Projects and cases where required;
·  To assist in maintaining a library of scientific papers relevant to canine welfare;
·  To manage incoming queries to the veterinary-related email Inboxes; (Vet/SAS/Hub etc);
·  To assist with queries or requests in relation to Campaigns;
·  To be a resource for veterinary queries from other Dogs Trust departments;
·  To assist in the facilitation of research projects supported by Dogs Trust;
·  To undertake training of Dogs Trust staff and other external groups;
·  To deputise for the VD / DVD at internal and external meetings;
·  To assist the Communications team with enquiries and to represent Dogs Trust in the media when required
·  To work with the Veterinary Nurse Co-ordinator in managing EMS placements
·  To undertake specific projects as required
·  Any other duties as required
Person Specification
The successful candidate must have the following:
·  Must be a registered MRCVS;
·  Must have solid experience in general small animal practice;
·  Some experience of veterinary practice management is an advantage;
·  Experience and good working knowledge of Word for Windows, Outlook, Excel is essential, PowerPoint an advantage;
·  Efficient administration and organisation skills (must have the ability to prioritise workload);
·  Some experience of project management is an advantage;
·  Self motivated and accustomed to using own initiative;
·  Willing and prepared to be flexible and work as part of a team;
·  Ability to communicate effectively and confidently at all levels;
·  Smart appearance is essential;
·  Willingness to travel
·  Interest in animal welfare and a desire to work in the charity sector.
