Varsity Letter Requirements for Cross Country
A. How to Earn a Letter
1. 18 points must be earned to qualify for a Varsity Letter
2. Athletes must complete the season is good standing qualify for any award.
3. Seniors who have run for 4 years and complete the season in good standing earn a varsity award.
4. An athlete may still earn awards if injured or incapacitated during the season. Practice and meet attendance is still mandatory. Coaches will use their judgment in extrapolating predicted performances or evaluating their contribution to the team.
5. Athletes must finish the season having met the academic requirements set forth by the district.
6. Varsity Letters will automatically be awarded to athletes that race the Regional, Sectional, or State Meets.
B. How to Earning Points
1. Conference Dual Meet
a. Non-Divisional: 1 point is earned for finishing ahead of the opposing team’s 7th runner.
b. Divisional: 2 points are earned for finishing ahead of the opposing team’s 7th runner.
2. Invitational Meet and Championship Series
a. 1 point is earned for running at time in the top ¾ of the varsity race.
b. 2 points are earned for running a time in the top ½ of the varsity race.
c. 3 points are earned for running a time in the top ¼ of the varsity race.
d. 1 additional point is earned for competing in the Varsity line-up during the State Championship Series (Regional, Sectional, and State Meets).
3. Personal Best Performances: 1 point is earned for every new Personal Best achieved during the season.
4. Achieving 2 season end goals previously discussed and approved by the coaches will earn 3 points.
