Unlocking the Prompt (Essay)

There are some key strategies to employ when trying to unlock an essay prompt. They include:

§ Using a graphic organizer to develop and structure your writing.

§ Following the appropriate essay structure of at least 5 paragraphs.

§ Proofreading your writing to avoid grammatical errors.

How do I structure an essay? Begin by doing the following:

§ Introduction: 1 paragraph in which you begin with a thesis statement and then three supporting statements which will be the basis for structuring the remainder of your essay.

§ Body: At least 3 paragraphs in which you include textual evidence with explanations, examples, details, and make connections between the topic and another piece of literature, the topic and your personal experiences, or the topic and real world events.

§ Conclusion- 1 paragraph in which you re-state and summarize your thesis. You should reiterate an important point from your paper. Tie everything together in a neat bundle. Never introduce new information in your conclusion.

3 Ways to Write a Thesis Sentence:

§ Questioning: Question the text or the audience.

§ Direct Address: Make a statement that directly address the topic

§ Quoting: Use a famous quote or saying that is relevant to the topic

Writing a Strong Conclusion:

§ End by re-stating or summarizing your thesis statement

§ Move the audience to action by suggesting that they do something

§ Utilize an appeal to emotion, logic, or ethics
