Period of the Grant: Summer 2009

Title of the Projects:

Job: A Commentary

“Preaching from the Wisdom Literature,” for a volume prepared by the Tyndale OT Study Group.

“’Holy War’ and the Universal God: Reading the Old Testament Holy War Texts in a Biblical-Theological and Post-Colonial Setting,’ in After Imperialism (Richard R. Cook and David W. Pao, eds; Wipf and Stock).

“Challenging the Idols of the Twenty-First Century: The Message of the Book of Ecclesiastes,” Stone-Campbell Journal.

“Proverbs,” translation for the Common English Bible (Abingdon Press).

“Isaiah 65:17-25,” Text to Sermon, Interpretation.

“History and the Old Testament,” in Hearing the Old Testament (edited by C. Bartholomew; Eerdmans)

I would like to thank the professional development committee for the grant to write over the summer. The grant was given based on my major project which is a Job commentary. Admittedly, I did not make as much progress as I had hoped on this commentary. I did write 50000 words though which is not bad, but I had hoped to write more. I had already written 80000 words, so I am more than half way done with the writing, which I now hope to finish in summer 2010.

The reason why I did not write as much as I had hoped was because I was sidetracked by some shorter projects as listed above. These include three chapters of books edited by other scholars, two journal articles, and a translation of Proverbs which is for an ecumenical Bible translation project edited by Joel Green of Fuller and David Peterson of Emory.

Not on the list is work done as editor for a major Bible Dictionary for Baker Publishing which has been a four year project (it is a million plus word illustrated dictionary), and is within months of completion. Also, I worked on the Old Testament of the Expanded Bible project (the New Testament came out this summer) which I am doing for Thomas Nelson along with Dan Taylor and Mark Strauss.

Again, thanks to the college for this grant.

Sincerely,

Tremper Longman
