This is a surprise reading test. Dictionaries will not be used, nor any materials from earlier in the course. Some questions are hard, some easy, but you will not confer with anyone else in the room. Answers should be written clearly on the paper.

If you understand these instructions, put one hand on your head.

When more than half the class have one hand on their head, you may begin. You will be penalized if you begin the test before this point. I shall be watching closely.

1. Choose the correct word from the selection below to fill the gaps in the paragraph

My first impressions of the Japanese came from watching them act like raving homicidal on television. This was in 1953, when I was six, and we got our first TV set, one of those comical old models with a teensy screen embedded in a wooden cabinet roughly the size of the house where Lincoln was born. Many of the

I watched on that little scream involved homicidal maniacs. If I had to summarize the important early lesson I learned from TV, it would be: ‘Watch out – the world is full of people who want to you’. The western shows, for example, were infested with bad men who did nothing but grow chin stubble and ride around people. Your average hero cowboy could not ride his horse twenty feet without getting ambushed by bad guys packing that could shoot 17 million bullets without reloading.

Three points for a win, one point for draw. If teams are level on points, standing will be decided on goal differences, and then goals scored. In the order does the group finish?

Japan and Korea play out an exciting 2-2 draw on the same day that China are leading Vietnam by a single goal when the game enters injury-time. After a frantic burst of action, the Vietnamese shoot themselves back onto level terms. Against Japan three days later, China again take the lead, not once, but twice, only to see the chance of their first victory yet again taken away, this time by a last minute penalty. No such problems in the other match of the day, where Korea and Vietnam fail to score a single goal between them. In the last matches of the group-stage, Japan scored into an early four-goal lead, and victory looks certain before the Vietnamese team start to claw their way back, scoring in the fiftieth, the sixty-seventh, the sixty-ninth, and the eighty-first minute. China keep battling against Korea, but their one goal is cancelled out by a long-range free-kick for the Koreans.

When you have finished the test, put both hands on your head. Keep your hands on your head. When half the class has both hands on their head, the time allocated for the test has ended, and I shall ask everyone to stop writing.
