UMG-RAHC Student Housing Policies

Welcome to the University of Texas Health Science Center’s Harlingen Regional Academic Health Center student housing, where your safety and comfort are our goals. The following list of rules and regulations has been designed to help us meet these goals. Violations will be reported to the designated Dean for the respective school. For UTHSCSA medical students, violations will be reported to the Regional Assistant Dean, Lower Rio Grande Valley, and may be reported to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs. Disciplinary action may include verbal warning, eviction, and/or appearance before the Promotion Committee. Failure to read or acknowledge these policies does not excuse or exempt students from compliance with all stated policies.

Rules and Regulations:

1. The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, its regional campuses, and the University of Texas System are not responsible for any loss of or damage to personal property. Students are responsible for all personal belongings and for acting responsibly to protect property and person. Students are also responsible for reporting violations to the appropriate public and/or private authorities.

2. Students are responsible for understanding and utilizing available apartment security systems and promptly reporting systems needing repairs to apartment management.

3. The UTHSCSA/RAHC housing designee reserves the right to inspect premises, at reasonable times throughout rotation, as deemed necessary.

4. Apartment keys and remote controls issued by the apartment complex must be returned to the apartment manager on the last day of rotation. Failure to return keys will result in a minimum $25.00 penalty fee. Failure to return gate access remote controls will result in a minimum $70.00 replacement fee.

5. Students are prohibited from providing housing keys and/or gate access remote controls to others (student or nonstudent). Students are not allowed to make copies of housing keys. Students are only allowed to possess keys and gate access remote controls for their assigned housing.

6. On the last day of scheduled rotations, students must vacate their apartments and check out with the respective apartment managers during routine business hours. Students desiring to check out later in the evening must make prior arrangements with their respective apartment managers. Students may not stay in assigned housing beyond their schedule rotation dates.

7. Guests are allowed based on the following requirements. Guests:

· must be 18 years of age or older

· are limited to one guest at a time per student

· will only be allowed from Friday morning through Monday morning

· are the student’s responsibility

· must comply with these rules and regulations. Students are responsible for their guest’s violations.

8. Male and female students will not be housed together. An exception may be made for married students on simultaneous rotations.

9. Attempts will be made to house students with similar viewpoints on guests together. When this is not possible, guests are not allowed.

10. Requests for changes in living arrangements are strongly discouraged. Should a student need to request a change in housing, the request must be submitted to and approved by the Housing Coordinator.

11. Students must not remove furniture or furnishings from apartments or move furniture or furnishings between apartments.

12. Use of alcohol is permissible as long as it is used in compliance with Texas Department of Public Safety laws, UTHSCSA policies, and respective apartment regulations.

13. No pets or animals are allowed in student housing. No exceptions will be made.

14. Smoking is STRICTLY PROHIBITED in student housing.

15. Thermostats must be maintained at temperatures of 75 degrees in the summer and 65 degrees in the winter. Ceiling fans may be used to attain a more comfortable temperature. Students, who are out of their apartments a period exceeding two hours, must leave their thermostats at 80 degrees in the summer and 60 degrees in winter (to conserve energy costs). Above average electrical use/cost will be considered excessive and students will be responsible for these costs. Costs may vary by housing unit.

16. Housekeeping services are provided bi-monthly; however, students are responsible for maintaining apartments in a clean and orderly manner at all times. Students are responsible for any charges related to property damage (other than normal wear and tear).

17. Students are responsible for removing trash from their housing units to available dumpsters.

18. Students assigned to Oak Terrace Apartments are warned not to attempt to follow other vehicles thru the security gate. The gate will close within ten (10) seconds--regardless of obstruction. Keep the gate access remote control with you at all times. Follow your respective apartment’s instructions if you do not have your remote.

19. Students assigned to Summit Apartments must use designated parking spaces.

20. Students are required to comply with Policy 5.5.10 of the UTHSCSA Handbook of Operating Procedures (HOP) regarding Internet Use (copy attached).
