Introduction:

This product is a guidance tool for students who are taking developmental courses at New River Community College and may need to know what resources are available to help insure their academic success. It gives the student a list of helpful resources they may need in the course of their college career, whether academic or personal in nature. It also includes a section that explains the reasoning behind the college’s placement testing procedure. This product was developed as one section of a larger “toolkit” for developmental English and Math students, but can be modified by other colleges and used alone. The entire “toolkit” will be available on hard-copy print, on the web, and on CD for use by students.

The Measure of a Successful Student:

Know and Use the Resources

This section will answer:

Why do I need to take the placement tests?

Where do I go on campus when I need help and / or guidance?

What tools are available on the internet?

What community services resource tools are available?

At this point, you have probably already taken the college placement tests. You should not think of them as barriers to education. Placement tests are tools that will help you succeed in reaching your goal of higher education. These tools are used to place you in the proper reading, writing and math classes that will challenge you, but not overwhelm you. Although you might not have enjoyed the testing process, the tests were not given to punish you or to hold you back. The ultimate goal of placement testing is your success in college.

LearningLinks

The internet is a wonderful tool for learning new information and for expanding your knowledge. New River Community College has developed a very useful website called LearningLinks, which is basically a “one-stop shop” for online learning materials for students and the community. The website provides additional resource information you can use when doing research for class assignments and projects. Most of the subjects that are taught at the college are categorized with links within each subject area, much like you will find when you do an internet search such as Google®. New links are continually added to the site as needed.

The NRCC Student Planner and Handbook contains a directory of community resources. Here is a condensed version:
