BIENVENUE and WELCOME BACK!!

Thank you to staff, students, parents and community members for an amazing start-up to this School Year. Transitioning can be challenging and adjusting to a new school or new school year can elicit feelings of confusion and uncertainty but our students are doing an excellent job learning the routines, finding their classes and following expectations necessary for future school success.

We encourage all students to get involved in extra-curricular activities this school year. Edenwood staff offer a variety of supplementary activities in sports, music, the arts and leadership. Students should listen for announcements throughout the year to ensure they have all the information necessary to partake in these enriching opportunities.

Please read and follow your child's Agenda daily. Through ongoing communication we can be proactive to ensure a successful year for all. If you have any questions, please call the appropriate staff member and they will be happy to assist you.

As we at EMS look forward to success this year, please remember – "We can not always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future". Let us continue to work productively together. Your cooperation and support are greatly appreciated.

2017-2018 It’s Time To Inspire Success

During this year’s opening day assembly students were asked to think about what it means to “Inspire Success”. Mrs. Walker and Mr. Soultanidis shared childhood stories on how they have been inspired. Their stories talked about how inspiration is found all around us and sometimes how inspiration can come from unexpected places or events. The assembly concluded by Mr. Soultanidis asking students to reflect on the following 3 things.

1.  Who has inspired you?

2.  How will you inspire others?

3.  What will you inspire to do this year?

Please take some time to look at the above questions and start a conversation with your child. We are looking forward to sharing some inspiring stories from our students with our community throughout the year.

School Council Nominations & Elections

Are you interested in getting involved in our school learning community? Becoming involved in School Council allows you to help our school in many ways and offer advice to the principal on a variety of issues. It’s a great way to meet other parents and families within our community and to help make our school even better for our children. Forms went home today and are posted on our website. Completed forms should be submitted to the office, along with a written rationale by Monday, September 25th, 2017. Elections will be held on Monday, October 2nd, 2017 from 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (if necessary). Ballot boxes will be available in the school lobby. Our first School Council meeting is to be held Wednesday, October 4th, 2017 (6:00 p.m.). As always, everyone is welcome to attend.

Reorganization Day:

Tuesday, September 26th

NO School for Students

During the first weeks of school the School Board collects enrolment numbers. In the event we need to reorganize, communication will be sent home. The School Board informs the principals as to how the school is organized, and the number of students to be in each classroom to be compliant with the Ministry of Education. At that point, if required, we would be redoing the timetable and balancing our classroom numbers. This is a difficult task and we appreciate your understanding and support.

BREAKFAST CLUB BEGNNING SOON INFORMATION TO FOLLOW

ALLERGIES

Due to the fact that we have several students and staff at Edenwood Middle School with severe or life-threatening allergies, we ask that you support our efforts to keep these individuals safe by doing the following:

q  Please read the label of any food you plan to send to school with your child. We ask that you please avoid preparing school lunches that contain nuts, peanuts and fish.

q  Stress that allergies can be life-threatening.

q  Discuss the importance of NOT sharing food with others and of washing their hands before and after eating.

q  We ask students not to bring in materials containing Latex. This product is commonly found in balloons.

Working together we can ensure the safety of all students and staff. Thank you for your co-operation and assistance in this important matter.

Healthy Eating – Healthy Minds and Bodies!

Edenwood students are encouraged to bring healthy items from home to eat, both at lunch time and as a snack. Nutritious, easy-to-carry food items are recommended for a quick energy boost mid-morning or mid-afternoon. We are asking that our students make healthy choices by avoiding sugar or chocolate, pop or other sugared drinks and snacks that are high in fat content but low in nutritional value. As well, all students are encouraged to carry a water bottle with them at all times, with water only.

Immunization Clinic September 12th Round 1

This clinic is for grade 7 students and grade 8s that have missed vaccines. Please review your child’s immunization records and if you have any questions please call Peel Health at 905-799-7700

MEDICATION AND MEDICAL INFORMATION

In order to ensure that we have up-to-date medication for our students, the form entitled "Administration of Prescribed Medication" is to be completed at the beginning of each academic year for all students receiving medication in the school. If your child requires medication to be taken during school hours, please pick up this form from the office to be completed by your child's physician, so your child can administer the medication during the school year. It is imperative that parents ensure medical information regarding your child is kept up-to-date in the school office by informing the Vice Principal. If you have any questions, please call our school’s Vice-Principal Ms Walker in the school office.

EMS STORE

Edenwood Middle School runs a store on the stage at the beginning of the lunch period each day. This store is run by our lunchroom supervisor who is assisted by grade 8 EMS student volunteers.

Items for sale at the store include beverages and snacks such as water, apple juice, orange juice, cheese and Terra Cotta cookies.

The tentative schedule for lunches, pending confirmation with vendors, is:

Monday: Chicken Hotdog (Non-Halal/Halal) $1.00

Tuesday: Pizza, cheese or pepperoni $1.50 a slice

Wednesday: Samosas (Halal) $1.00 each

Thursday: Mr. Sub $3.50 ea.(Turkey, BLT & Veggie)

Friday: Pizza, cheese or pepperoni $1.50 a slice

Please note orders for our store are based on estimates so we occasionally run out of food items.

SPC – Student Price Card

We are offering the SPC for students to purchase. The card costs $10.00 and can be purchased in the office with exact change.

The SPC allows students to receive special discounts on purchases made from many retailers: dining, clothes, beauty, lifestyle and sports.

STUDENTS ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL

Please remember teacher supervision of students does not begin until 8:00 a.m. Only students receiving assistance with teachers or school activities should arrive prior to 8:00 a.m. In the afternoon teacher supervision ends at 2:30 p.m. Once again only students receiving assistance with teachers or school activities should remain on school property.

Due to the high number of students being transported by bus we are closing the parking lot from 8:00 am to 8:15 am and from 2:00 pm to 2:15 pm. Parents wishing to pick up or drop off students during these times are asked to do so by parking legally on the street. This may mean parking a little farther from the school so that traffic is not interrupted and students have a safe path to school. As always we recommend that students use some form of active transportation (e.g. walk, bike, scooter, skateboard….).

How do I know if my child is eligible for transportation?

Student Transportation of Peel Region (STOPR) has a website where you can find out whether your child is eligible for transportation based on your home address. Visit www.stopr.ca or businfo.stopr.ca, click on "Transportation Eligibility" and enter your information. You can also visit this site to check for bus cancellations and delays.

Use of Technology

Please visit the updated peelschools.org website for more information about BYOD – Bring Your Own Device.

*Students are not permitted to take photos or videos on school property due to privacy regulations. Thank you for your cooperation and support.

TERRY FOX WALK, September 29th

Our Terry Fox fundraising campaign will begin next week and will run until Sept. 29th which is the date that classes will go out and walk a predetermined route through the community. Students and staff are encouraged to wear red and white as these are the colours that symbolize the Terry Fox Foundation.

Fall Spirit Day - Students will be participating in a Fall Spirit Day in the month of October. This represents an excellent opportunity for students to develop

relationships and demonstrate teamwork through games. Students will select their class nickname and colours prior to the day.

Library News

Over the first two weeks of school all Edenwood students will be receiving library orientation. The library will be open for students to sign out books and devices as soon as their class has been through the orientation session. This year, the library will be open during lunch on Days: 1, 3, 5, 7 & 9 and after school on Days 1, 2 & 9 from 2:15-2:30. Students are welcome to visit the library during these extended hours to sign out books, to complete homework, to use the computer, or just to read. These extended hours will begin in October.
