An Invitation to Apply for 2013-14
Education Policy Fellowship Program (EPFP)
The Education Policy Fellowship Program (EPFP) is a ten-month professional development experience co-sponsored by the Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL), Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES and the Department of Education Policy & Social Analysis at Teachers College. The Metro New York chapter of EPFP promotes learning in the areas of leadership development, policy analysis, and policy implementation for professionals with an interest in public education and related fields. EPFP has operated continuously since its inception in 1964 and now has 13 sites across the country. EPFP alumni work in a variety of government, non-profit, and private sector organizations where they make important contributions to public policy.
The Metro NY EPFP at Teachers College has two components: 1) participation in the New York Metro EPFP involving monthly Friday morning policy seminars at Teachers College; and, 2) regional and national meetings involving Fellows from all 13 EPFP sites.
Metro New York EPFP. In 2013-14, the Metro EPFP will meet on six Friday mornings to discuss education policy and leadership issues with guest speakers working in the education policy arena. This year, the policy focus of these sessions will concentrate on national school reform initiatives and the ways that these reforms are influencing change at the local school district level. EPFP participants will also attend an optional Regional Leadership Forum at the U.S. Army War College on October 10 and 11 and a Washington Policy Seminar in April 27-30, 2014. Across these learning activities Fellows will focus on:
· Strategic leadership development. On October 10 & 11, there is an optional trip to the U.S. Army War College to become familiar with their strategic leadership curriculum and the challenges strategic leaders expect to face in the coming years.
· Education policy development & implementation at the local, state, national and global levels. Fellows will engage with policy makers in Washington in order to develop an appreciation for the complexities of the political context that surrounds the policy development and implementation processes. Each Fellow learns to write a policy options brief by the end of the year.
· Networking by gaining access to state and national decision-makers who shape education policy.
EPFP relies on a combination of grants and tuition fees from sponsoring organizations for support. Foundation grants to IEL enable it to lower the program fee to $2,150. In addition, Fellows who are employed full time may ask their employer to sponsor their Fellowship. In addition to the program fee, employing organizations will often agree to underwrite travel expenses to the two national meetings. Teachers College & Columbia University graduate students may elect to take the EPFP as an independent study at the regular TC tuition rate (in addition to the program fee).
Applications will be reviewed and accepted on a first come, first served basis for the 2013-14 Fellowship year. This is a non-competitive process for students previously admitted to any of Columbia University’s graduate schools.
Applications should be received as soon as possible (applications will be received until the cohort is filled). To apply, please complete the attached application form with a non-refundable deposit of $350 (makes checks payable to “Teachers College” and send to Dr. Monson at the address below. Additional information may be obtained through the I.E.L. website (http://www.iel.org, click on “Fellows”). For further information on the New York Metro EPFP, please contact: Dr. Robert J. Monson, EPFP Coordinator; Teachers College, Columbia University; 525 West 120th Street, Box 11; New York, NY 10027. Internet:
