Teacher: Todd Houston Room: 212 Class: More than Just a Game

Course Description: Sports and Society Throughout History (1/2 Credit) – This course will examine the impact of sports and recreation (hunting/fishing for sport) on society throughout history from the Olympics of Ancient Greece, the Coliseum events of Ancient Rome, through modern sporting events such as the Kentucky Derby, the Super Bowl, and the NCAA Basketball tournament. Students will analyze the importance of sporting and other recreational events through research using technology and other research tools. Students will also discuss important sports figures in modern history such as Babe Ruth, Knute Rockne, Jack Dempsey, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, and Peyton Manning

Core Content: This course is an elective; it is not a requirement for graduation. Even though it is an elective we will still cover the core content that should be taught to high school students according to the state of Kentucky. This course will focus on Culture, particularly the element of sports in culture.

Class Expectations: There are high expectations for all students in this class. This course will strive to improve each student’s ability to read, write, participate in groups, and use critical thinking skills.

Class Rules: 1. Respect me and I will respect you.

2. Raise your hand and wait to be called on before speaking.

3. Put your first and last name on all work. Their will be a 20 point deduction on all work turned in without a first and last name.

4. No food or drink in class but you can chew gum.

5. Take pride in being an EAGLE!

Grading: 90-100 = A Text: None

80-89 = B

70-79 = C

60-69 = D

0-59 = F

Attendance/Make up Work: Attendance is of the utmost importance in order to do well in this class. Credit will be given for each assignment given in class. This can help to improve your grade if you complete all assignments, or it can be very damaging to your grade if you fail to complete each assignment. Late assignments will be accepted, but could result in a loss of points. Assignments are your responsibility. If you miss the day of an assignment. You should always ask for make-up work. Unexcused absences result in a “0” on any assignments assigned on that day.

Other Content: We will be watching films about sports which may include strong language, violence, and sexual situations. If you or your parents find any of this material offensive, then you might want to consider another course.
