Keyboarding/Intro to Word

Teacher : Elder/Little Subject/Class: Computers/Careers (6th Grade) Week of: 3/30-4/2

Unit Focus: Students will learn proper keyboarding techniques and ergonomics. They will practice those techniques using Kids Typing Skills and MicroType. Students will be introduced to the basics of Microsoft Word and skills.

Generate a Testing Hypothesis / After the SLO, students will use Kids Typing Skills as an introduction to keyboarding. They will begin with the first lesson: Home row keys and continue lessons on top and bottom row keys. They will be introduced to proper keyboarding techniques and ergonomics. / Discuss/Review proper keyboarding techniques and ergonomics. Students will continue working in Kids Typing Skills to learn the basics of keyboarding and watch a video on keyboarding techniques.
(2nd half) Students will create a new account in Micro-Type. This is the software that students will use through-out the 9 weeks for their warm-up keyboarding lessons and tests. Students will work individually on their lessons.
Students will practice Keyboarding test 1. Students will be given the following website: www.typing-lessons.org to practice for tests at home. / Students will log in to their Microtype account and continue working on their keyboarding lessons. This is the software that students will use through-out the 9 weeks for their warm-up, keyboarding lessons and tests. Students will work individually on their keyboarding lessons.
(2nd half) Students will use the internet to research “What are MS Word and its purpose?” Using Edu Canon, students will view a MS Word Tutorial. Students will answer questions throughout the video and practice the following skills: opening, minimizing, maximizing, and closing a document.
/ Using Microtype, students will practice for their keyboarding test.
2nd half: Students will view a video on the difference between a file and a folder. Students will create a folder for their MS Word projects.
Students will create their first “Journal” document and learn how to create a folder for proper organization of files. Students will practice basic Microsoft Word Skills. Students will learn how to change font face, font size, font color, bold, italics, underline, copy, paste, etc. Students will also practice saving a file in the Microsoft Word Project folder. Their first journal entry will be about keyboarding skills and Microsoft office skills. They will write about what they learned. If they finish early, they will go back to freetypinggame.net and work on keyboarding lessons. / Keyboarding/Career Assessment.
