Ms Catarina Hebbard – Indel-ABILITY Arts

File number: 137/220/701/239

Chairman: I would now like to call on Ms Catarina Hebbard who will address the Chamber on Indel-ABILITY Arts. Orderly, please show Ms Hebbard into the Chamber.

Welcome, Ms Hebbard; you have five minutes, please proceed.

Ms Catarina Hebbard: Thank you. Madam Chairman, LORD MAYOR and Councillors: it is an honour and a privilege to be presenting to Council today. My name is Catarina Hebbard and I am co-creator of Indel-ABILITY, a theatre company based here in Brisbane for artists who identify as having a disability.

We are often asked: what does that name mean? Well, we thought about what our mission was. We aim to make theatre that stays with you long after you’ve left the theatre. This led us to a discussion about words that mean leaving a mark. Indelible ink. We changed the middle ‘i’ to an ‘a’, so we are now IndelABILITY; theatre that leaves its mark.

A couple of years ago I started a conversation with one of my peers, RebeccaRoberts, and we discovered that we both had the same goal, and from here IndelABILITY Arts was born. After much research, we realised there are very few opportunities for artists who identify as having a disability in the mainstream of our creative industries, yet many of those artists have forged forward to become outstanding in their field. I am sure you’ve heard of TimSharp, the artist who is also a writer. We have all seen the press on model Madeline Stuart.

These are just a couple of people that we know about. We know that, with support and opportunities, more artists can start to make their mark in our communities and on our stages, and hopefully on our films. Our aim as IndelABILITY is to become the first fully professional theatre company that creates work for, with and by artists with disabilities—a truly inclusive and diverse company that is committed to creating ongoing work for our artists.

Earlier this year we applied for a community development and capacity grant. These grants, as you know, range from $2,000 to $10,000, and we were successful in receiving the full $10,000. That funding has allowed us to develop our very first production, Look Mum, No Hands, a show about the road to independence as artists in an industry that doesn’t celebrate difference. It has enabled us to establish ourselves as a company and to make incredible connections across the community.

Our application outlined a project that would pay our artists and provide access to other professionals working in the industry, culminating in a showing at the end of the development period. We have also received in-kind support from BrisbanePowerhouse. We commenced the development on 10 August, and we have two showings next week, on 20 and 21 November—and it is really exciting. We can get the information to you if you would like to come along. We’d love to see some of you there.

The community development and capacity building grant from Brisbane City Council enables us to do the following: employ our four artists with mixed abilities. Our artists work together three times a week for 14 weeks. In this time they have created and written their own script about their experiences as artists, their struggles, the highs and lows, and their ambitions. The show is very full. We have had much support from many industry professionals over this. None of this work would have been possible without this grant.

I spoke to our actors and told them that I was coming here today to present to Council, and I asked them if there was anything they wanted to say to you. This is what they said. We work really, really hard and we love this so much, it makes us happy. I can’t wait to come to rehearsals on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. We have pushed ourselves. We laugh a lot. I cried a couple of times. Me too. Karen’s song makes me cry every time. We’ve fallen down; yeah, I literally did that, and figuratively.

We made a show. I get to make people laugh. People get to see me be awesome. I get to show my dance moves. I’m a paid professional actor. Well, that proves to all the people out there who said that I couldn’t do this that they were wrong to underestimate me. I want to take our show on tour. We want to go to Adelaide. We want to go to Edinburgh. We want to present at the next DisabilityFestival in London.

This is what they wanted to say to you. But most of all, thank you very much for your support and your belief in us. All of this is sparked by the support we receive from this grant, and they felt that their company, that we created, is worthwhile and they are going to do you proud. We have expected a lot, and we have been rewarded tenfold. If you come to the show, you will see that. Thank you very much.

Chairman: Thank you, Ms Hebbard, for coming to address us with that very important project.

I would like to call on Councillor ADAMS to respond, please.

Response by Councillor Krista ADAMS, Chairman of the Brisbane Lifestyle Committee

Councillor ADAMS: Take a seat, Catarina.

Ms Catarina Hebbard: I’ve just stopped shaking.

Councillor ADAMS: Thank you so much for coming in this afternoon just to tell us about the wonderful work you are doing. We are very intimidating, but we’re not that scary, really. It is fantastic to hear the work that you are doing with the grant that we supplied you through our Community, Development and Capacity Building grants. Your project, Look Mum, No Hands, is really one of a kind. I think that is what is so exciting about it, but maybe it’s just the first of one of a kind, and it will go on to bigger and greater things.

This project was the first production that had an ensemble of artists with a range of disabilities. Obviously you’ve got a lot of different individual stories about the road to independence, and as you said in the messages that they gave us, it is giving these people a creative voice to make sure that they are emerging as artists regardless of what their disability is as well.

My understanding is it’s based around the life and stories of the performers, and their daily life with their disability and how they incorporate that through a mix of communication styles, including sign language, movement, visual aids and, as you mentioned, hopefully next year, into full production and a bit of a tour—worldwide as well; it sounds very, very exciting.

I think it is interesting to note today that in Queensland there is no other mainstream theatre company that is coordinated by artists with a disability for artists with a disability. This project really is about raising the profile of these artists and allowing them to share that creative voice. So the objective of our grant program is absolutely what we see those responded to by Indel-ABILITY Arts, increased community identity and connection, increased social inclusion—obviously they are loving their rehearsal three days a week—reduce the isolation of people with high needs, build innovative and effective responses to the needs that they have as artists themselves as well, and of course respond to the greater community issues and needs.

That also includes not just people with a disability but these grants also support our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, young people, seniors and of course those that are at IndelABILITY Arts as well. Thank you so much for coming this afternoon and sharing it. We gave out a total of $123,996 last financial year, of which you were a beneficiary of $10,000 of that. It is great to hear that it is going from strength to strength, and we look forward to hearing about all your worldwide tours when you come back to see us. Thanks, Catarina.

Chairman: Ms Hebbard, I understand that you are forwarding the invitation via the Clerks, and we will ensure that that is distributed to all Councillors for you.

Ms Catarina Hebbard: Thank you so much.

Chairman: Thank you for coming in.
