TEACH Grant Program

Purpose: To provide financial assistance for tuition and fees or living expenses for students to become teachers of bilingual education or English as a second Language.

Funding Source: U. S. Department of Education – Financial Aid

Criteria: The TEACH grant is a Federal Funding Source for undergraduate students enrolled in critical need teaching areas such as Bilingual and English as Second Language (ESL) education. This grant is a loan that will be paid by the participant through teaching service for 4 years within a period of 8 years after completion of the degree and certification program. The student may apply for up to $4,000 per academic year. Juniors and seniors pursuing the EC-6 ESL generalist, the EC-6 Bilingual or 4-8 Mathematics/ESL, Science/ESL or English language arts/ESL programs may apply.

Application Procedures and Deadline:

To qualify for a grant award for the 2012-2013 academic year the student must submit the following to the Bilingual/ESL Teacher Certification Office at any time:

· Copy of unofficial transcripts to verify acceptance in the undergraduate teacher education program.

· A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 or 75thor higher percentile rank on any of the portions of the ACT or SAT exams.

· A copy of the FAFSA application for the 2012-2013 academic year.

· Copy of TEACH Grant Counseling verification form. The online counseling can be completed at https://teach-ats.ed.gov/ats/index.action. Print the form.

· Make an appointment with Dr. Boyd to submit the paperwork mentioned above and to fill out an eligibility form. The paperwork will be submitted to the UNT Office of Financial Aid for processing and posting of the anticipated aid in the student’s account. Disbursement of funds will take place after the 12th days of classes each semester.
