MEIOSIS GAME

Purpose:Snurfles, just like any other organism, must reproduce in order to continue as a species! But how does this happen? By the end of this game, you will understand how MEIOSIS and FERTILIZATION work to make offspring! You will also see how GENETIC characteristics are passed on through these processes and the connection between meiosis and genetics!

TAB 1: Meiosis and Genetics Interactive

First, you need to learn about Meiosis and Genetics and how they are connected. This is an easy level 1 but it is RECOMMENDED that you complete it.

INTERPHASE

Sketch a cell in Interphase / *Which of the following is true of Interphase? Circle the correct answer
  1. It is a part of Meiosis
  2. It occurs before Meiosis
  3. The Cell does normal cell activities during interphase.
  4. Both B and C.

What is going in the nucleus during Interphase?

The uncoiled stringy DNA found in the nucleus during interphase is called ______

Chromatin from Mom is ______(what color?)

Chromatin from Dad is ______(what color?)

How many pieces of chromatin do your cells have ? ______

Where did they come from? ______

What determines the traits of an organism? ______

What do the letters G and g represent? (Different forms of alleles)

What are two variations for fur in Snurfles?

What must happens before meiosis? ______

Sketch unreplicated DNA/chromatin / Sketch the replication/replicated DNA
*Which of the following are true statements?
  1. DNA replicates during Interphase
  2. Chromatin is made of DNA.
  3. Genes are found on DNA.
  4. All of the above.
/ *Why do organisms do Meiosis?
  1. To make more skin and muscles cells in their bodies.
  2. To make gametes (sperm and eggs)
  3. Just for fun!
  4. All of the above.

How many divisions are there in meiosis? ______Name them:

Meiosis I ______, ______, ______, ______

Meiosis II ______, ______, ______, ______

What helps you to remember the order of the phases? ______

Meiosis I and Meiosis II both have the same order for their phases. Which is the correct one ? ______

Sketch a cell in Prophase I / The major event in Prophase I :
  1. Chromosomes condense
  2. chromosomes move to the opposite ends of the cells
  3. nucleus disintegrate

Why do chromosomes condense during prophase I meiosis? ______

Sketch chromosomes before condensation / Sketch chromosomes after condensation
Sketch Homologous chromosomes / Sketch Sister chromatid
Define a TETRAD / Draw a TETRAD

Circle your answer (more than one)

* What important events take place during PROPHASE I:

  1. Chromatin condenses to form visible chromosomes.

II. The nucleus and nucleolus disintegrate.

III. Homologous chromosomes pair up to form Tetrads.

IV. Chromosomes line up down the middle of the cell.

METAPHASE I:

Events in Metaphase I
(tetrads line up on the equator) / Sketch Metaphase I

Anaphase I:

What happens during Anaphase I? / Sketch using colors Anaphase I

Telophase I:

What happens during Telophase I? / Draw
Define Cytokinesis / Draw this phase:
How many chromosomes does each haploid cell have? / Draw two haploid cells at the end of Meiosis I
Draw a diploid cell (at the start of meiosis I) / Draw 2 haploid cells (end result of meiosis I)

PROPHASE II

* How is Prophase I different than Prophase II?

A. Tetrads do not form in Prophase II

B. The nucleus does not go away during prophase II.

C. There area no chromosomes during Prophase II.

D. All of the above.

Describe what Happens during Metaphase II: / Sketch Metaphase II
Describe what Happens during Anaphase II: / Sketch
Describe what Happens during Telophase II: Major Events:
