ELEMENT SUPERHERO/VILLAIN PROJECT

A chemist turned movie producer is looking for characters for her new movie. Her movie will feature superheroes and villains that have characteristics of elements on the periodic table. Your MISSION is to select a mystery element from Ms. Nail, the producers cup. You will then create a superhero or villain based on that element to be featured in her movie. You will then present your character to the producer (Ms. Nail) to decide if she would like your character to be in her movie.

The steps for the project are listed below: (check them off as you go).

______1. Select an element from Ms. Nail’s cup for your character.

______2. Complete ALL information in the data chart below by researching your element. If something doesn’t apply to your element, you will put N/A on your chart.

______3. Present your character to the producer (Ms. Nail) by using one of the templates provided along with your data sheet.

_____You may choose a male or female

_____Use LOTS of color (COLOR PENCILS ONLY. NO MARKERS!)

_____Design the characters costume (ideas: boots, cape, helmet, symbol)

_____ Include the characters name at the top in the “Pow” shout out. (be creative) The name MUST go with it’s superpower.

______4. Write a character description that answers all of the information on the chart on the notecard provided.

BE CREATIVE! BE CREATIVE!

THIS PROJECT WILL BE FOR A GRADE AND WILL BE DISPLAYED OUTSIDE OF OUR CLASSROOM. HAVE FUN WITH IT, BUT MAKE SURE YOU ARE STICKING TO THE GUIDELINES. ITS HAS TO MAKE SENSE!

Data Sheets count for 50%, Drawing counts 25% and Analysis counts 25%

Late Grade: If the project is NOT complete by the due date, a late grade will be given. I will take off 20 points and the highest you can make is an 80/B.

Websites for Data Research

You MUST use these sites for research. Use the following websites to research both physical and chemical properties about the element assigned:

1. Does your element have a color? 2. IF so, what color is it?
1. What is your element’s Boiling point and Melting Point? / Boiling –
Melting -
What is the name of the family he/she is in? (Remember! There are 18 families on the PTE)
1. What Period is he/she found on the PTE? 2. How many electron shells does he/she have? (Remember! There are 7 periods.) / 1.
2.
1. What group is your element in? (Remember! There are 8 groups. / 1.
1. How many Valence Electrons does it have? 2. Is he/she looking to gain or lose valence electrons? / 1.
2.
Is he/she a metal, nonmetal or a metalloid?
Is he/she malleable, ductile or brittle?
Is he/she a good or poor conductor of heat and electricity? OR is it a semiconductor?
What is your superheroes state of matter at room temperature? Solid, Liquid or Gas?
What does he/she commonly bond with?
Is he/she highly reactive or stable? Hint: check to see what group your element is in.
1. What powers does your character have? 2. How did he/she get the powers? (THIS IS STRICTLY YOUR IDEA, base it off of the everyday uses and properties.) / 1.
2.
What are the strengths and/or weaknesses of his/her powers based on the properties of the elements? (THIS IS STRICTLY YOUR IDEA! You DO NOT GOOGLE THIS! Base it off everyday uses and properties.)
1. Describe what your character look like? HINT: What color is it (if it has one.), What state of matter is it?
1. Which other element would be “compound sidekick” of your element? 2. What is its name? Ex) Batman and Robin (HINT: look for a compound that your element is included in. Think about the “happy number”) 3. Why? / 1.
2.
3.
1. Which other element would be an archenemy of your element? 2. What is its name? 3. Why? (Hint: What element would not mix well with your element?)
Why should YOUR character be included in the movie? What makes him or her so cool or special?
Analysis: This is your element’s background story. When you write your analysis, you will be justifying your representation of the character, and its classification as a superhero or villain. Things to include are:
1.  How did he/she get their superpower? (ex. Spider man got his powers when a spider bit him.)
2.  How will he/she USE their superpower? (This MUST relate to its physical properties, its classification, and its uses.)
3.  Does he/she have a compound sidekick? If so, How does his/her sidekick help him/her? (This means, what element can it bond with to get the happy number of 8, what compound?)
4.  Does your superhero or villain have an archenemy? (This means, what element does it NOT react well with? Ex. Superman does not react well with Kryptonite)
Remember! You MUST be creative and detailed when writing your analysis (background story). It MUST make sense, it must be in paragraph form and you must use all of your data from above to write this. It MUST be 1 paragraph AT LEAST

EXTRA CREDIT: DRESS UP as your superhero or villain on the day that the project is due and present your superpower to me. This will be fun and a little extra credit never hurt anyone.
