STATION #2: HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION- “THE LORAX”

Review of the Theme:

The theme of Human-Environment Interaction describes the relationship between a place and the interaction of the people who live there.

· How people adapt to their environment (ex. How homes are built in a climate prone to hurricanes)

· How people change their environment to meet their needs (ex. Cutting down trees to make lumber, air pollution from factories)

Procedure for Activity:

1) On your desks is the book called The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. As a group, I want you to read the story aloud together.

2) While your group is reading the story, I want you to create a list with as many examples as you can of the theme, Human-Environment Interaction, in the book The Lorax.

3) Once you are done reading and have created your list, I want you as a group to discuss and answer the question (in a paragraph): How does this book show the theme of Human-Environment Interaction?

4) Once you have completed the above task, you can move on to the extension activity.

Extension:

1) Create a list of ways people in Denville interact with their environment. Create a chart that has two columns: negative interactions with the environment (like littering) and positive interactions with their environment (planting trees).
