SOUTHEAST REGION STUDY GUIDE

What are the different parts of a river? / The source is where the river begins. Tributaries are smaller rivers that connect with larger rivers. The mouth of the river is where it opens up into a larger body of water and the port is where goods are loaded or unloaded.
What are river basins and deltas? / River basins are the areas that are drained by a river and its tributaries and deltas are formed from soil deposited by rivers.
What is the longest river in the country and why is it important? / The longest river in the country is the Mississippi (which begins at Lake Itasca and ends in New Orleans). It is home to many animals, and provides shipping routes/water to people.
What is agriculture and why is it important in the Southeast? / Agriculture is growing crops and raising animals. The growing season is long enough for crops like oranges, peanuts, cotton, sugarcane, rice, etc…to grow and cash crops can provide money to the economy.
What is irrigation and why must farmers be careful with it? / Irrigation is when farmers drain water from nearby bodies of water to water their crops in the dry season. They must be careful not to drain too much water because it could affect the environment in bad ways.
Why is coal important to part of the Southeast region’s economy? What were labor unions? / Coal is a mineral that provides heat and light. Labor unions wanted better working conditions for miners because they worked in cramped spaces and had health issues because of the dust.
What were some reasons people settled in the Southeast? / African Americans settled after being brought over as slaves, farmers were attracted by the fertile soil, there are many resources, there is a pleasant climate, and they were searching for jobs.
What are natural features of the Southeast? / Natural features are the coastal plain, swamps, Everglades, Appalachians, hardwood forests, rivers, and coal mines.
Why did slavery grow in the Southeast? / Slavery grew because the plantations grew and there was a need for a large labor force (many people to work).
What are tourists and why are they attracted to the Southeast region? / Tourists are people who visit places. Tourist attractions in the Southeast include beaches, the Everglades, Jamestown, homes of Presidents, Disney World, Jamestown, etc...
What are some unique factors of the Southeast region? / Unique factors of the Southeast include certain historical events, wildlife (manatee), and traditions (Mardi Gras in New Orleans).
What are the Everglades? / The Everglades are a low area of land in Florida covered mostly with water. There are many different types of birds and animals that live there.
What is the “sun belt?” / The “sun belt” consists of southern states from Florida to California. These states have a mild climate and attract many tourists.
Why is the Southeast a region of mixed agriculture now? / The Southeast has mixed agriculture because bugs destroyed the main cotton crop in the 1800s and it ruined farmers. They learned not to rely on one crop.
Which states are part of the Southeast region? / The Southeast consists of MD, DE, VA, WV, TN, KY, NC, SC, GA, FL, MS, AR, AL, and LA.
