Seniors and Parents of Seniors: Please be aware that the graduation dates are not yet established. The date printed on the transcript is not correct.

Students needing a transcript should fill out a request form (located in School Counseling Department). Seniors may request five copies for no charge. Additional transcript will be printed for $3.00. However, transcripts needed for scholarship applications will be printed free of charge. Please keep in mind that test scores (SAT or ACT) are not included in your transcript. Those scores must be sent directly from the testing site to the college.

Students wishing to take a college day need to pick up the “College Day Request Form” in the Student Counseling Office. The student will fill out the top three lines, get a parent signature and return the form to Mrs. Thompson in the Counseling Office for Mrs. Yates’s signature. This form must be picked up prior to the college day visit. A portion of the form must be filled out during your college visit and the form must be returned to the first period teacher upon your return to school.

Scholarships

Unless otherwise indicated, the following scholarships are available in the school counseling department. Please see Mrs. Thompson, department secretary, for information and applications.

PLEASE NOTE: Seniors must be a member of the PTSA or Athletic Booster Club in order to be eligible for any scholarships offered by the PTSA or Athletic Booster Club.

Scholarship Pointer of the Week: Ask the pastor or secretary at your place of worship if your church (synagogue, temple, mosque, etc.) offers scholarships to members.

Davidson College Belk Scholarship- Covers four years at Davidson College plus summer stipends for study and enrichment. For information go to www.davidson.edu/admissions or see Mrs. Montgomery in A-118. We must nominate one senior by November 15.

University of Virginia- The Jefferson Scholars Program includes four years of undergraduate study at UVA plus stipends for additional study and travel. We can nominate one student for the Jefferson Scholarship and must submit that name by November 6, 2006. For information see Mrs. Montgomery in A-118.

The Robertson Scholars Program- Seniors interested in this program are encouraged to complete the Supplemental Materials form to elaborate on their qualifications which can be found at www.robertsonscholars.org. . This form supplements a student’s application to Duke and/or UNC-Chapel Hill. Although some candidates may be selected from their application, completing this form is the only way to ensure that your materials will be reviewed by the Robertson Scholars Program. The priority deadline for submitting supplemental materials is December 1, 2006.

October Deadlines

Nuestra Juventud (Our Youth) Scholarship Program: Scholarship winners are chosen based on leadership qualities, academic achievement, and character. Several $500 scholarships will be awarded; one $1000 scholarship will be awarded. On-line info/application at . Applications also available from Mrs. Thompson. Application deadline is October 2, 2006.

Morehead Scholarship at UNC-CH (Self-Nomination)- Seniors who wish to apply directly for the Morehead Scholarship can do so at the Morehead Foundation Website, www.themorehead.org. Applicants should follow the Nomination Instructions link to Student Instructions. Electronically submitted applications are due by October 3, 2006. See Mrs. Montgomery in A-118 if you have questions.

Appalachian State University/Bob Allen Scholarship- South Meck can nominate one candidate for this award which covers 4 years at ASU. Application criteria: definite plans to attend ASU, involvement in school (esp. sports) and community activities, leadership potential, strong college preparation and excellent grades. Pre-application available from Mrs. Thompson in the Counseling Department; applications due Tuesday, October 3, to Mrs. Montgomery in A-118. Interviews: October 9 and 10.

NC State University Centennial Scholarship- $47,500 scholarship to freshmen entering the College of Textiles and planning to study engineering, business management, chemistry, polymer chemistry, international studies, design, apparel, sourcing, fashion, merchandising, or retail management. South Meck can nominate two candidates. Eligibility criteria: majoring in one of the above fields, excellent academically and well-rounded; must meet NCSU admissions requirements. If interested in this scholarship, please see Mrs. Montgomery by October 6th in A-118. Nominations are due to NCSU on November 1, 2006.

Indiana State University College of Business Scholarships- Four-year scholarships worth $30,000 with a personal laptop computer and other services. Eligibility criteria: leadership experience and potential, minimum 3.35 GPA, ranking in top 10% of class, combines SAT of 1000 (CR and Math only). South Meck can recommend one graduating senior. See Mrs. Montgomery n A-118 if you are interested. Deadline: October 13.

Washington University in St. Louis-Danforth (Merit) Scholarship: full or partial tuition scholarship renewable for four years of undergraduate studies. Washington University is a highly selective, liberal arts college in St. Louis, Missouri. Interested seniors should see Mrs. Montgomery in A-118 for details. On-line at . South Meck nominees’ applications are due to Washington University on October 15.

Erskine College-E. B. Kennedy (Merit) Scholarship: renewable scholarship covering all costs of attending this outstanding, private, liberal arts college in South Carolina. Applicants should have a 3.5 GPA or better and total SAT of approx. 1180 (old scoring) or ACT composite of at least 24. On-line info at www.erskine.edu. South Meck’s nominee info due to Erskine College on October 15. See Mrs. Montgomery in A-119 for details or Mr. Scott Kelly, teacher cadet instructor.

N. C. Teaching Fellows Scholarship Program- Interested seniors can visit the website at www.teachingfellows.org for the Application, 3 reference forms and the School District Screening Committee Form. To access application materials at the website, click on the Applicants link then click on the Applications Material link. All application materials are due to Mrs. Montgomery, Teaching Fellows Liaison Counselor, in A-118 on October 20.

Horatio Alger Association Scholarship Programs- Scholarships for financially needy students who have shown integrity and determination in overcoming personal adversity. Scholarship amounts range from $2,500 to $20,000. On-line applications accepted through October 30 at www.horatioalger.com/scholarships.

November Deadlines

Emory Scholars Program- Covers four years of undergraduate study and includes enrichment programs, stipends and study abroad. Applicants need outstanding academic records, extraordinary personal qualities,a nd extensive service to school and community. You must be nominated by South Meck to be eligible. See Mrs. Montgomery in A-118 for information. Application deadline at Emory is November 1, 2006. Info about Emory admission is at www.emory.edu/ADMISSIONS.

Emory University Goizueta Business School Scholars Program- Four-year scholarship in the Emory School of business, including study abroad, mentoring, and many other enrichment activities. Eligibility criteria: outstanding academic record, extensive involvement in school and community service, leadership experience, etc. Applicant must be nominated be South Meck. See Mrs. Montgomery in A-118 for information. Application deadline for Emory is November 1.

Unspecified Deadlines

U. S. Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) Scholarship/Pilot Recruiting Diversity Program: AFROTC scholarships cover four years of college tuition,an annual book allowance of $750 and a monthly stipend of $250-$400. Minimum requirements to apply: 3.25 GPA or better and a 26 ACT score or 1180 SAT score (math and verbal sections). Data sheets for potential candidate information are available from Mrs. Thompson. Art Institutes Best Teen Chef 2007, The Art Institutes/Americans for the Arts Poster Design contest and The Art Institutes Passion for Fashion Contest: Seniors interested in careers in culinary arts, graphic design, or fashion marketing/design can get all information and entry forms at www.artinstitutes.edu/contests.
