Dear Parents,

Welcome to a new school year at Oak Hills Elementary, and welcome to Loe Skyway! I am looking forward to a wonderful year with you and your child. I am a firm believer in open communication, so please feel free to e-mail for an appointment to speak with me. The fastest way to get in touch with me is actually by e-mail. My address is . I will ask that each parent send me an e-mail the first week of school, so that I am able to create an address book for our class and may communicate with you in terms of e-mail.

Enclosed, you will find information on policies and procedures, which will be helpful to you and your child during the school year. Please read all of the enclosed information and return all necessary items by Friday, August 21, 2015. The fifth grade team has spent time this summer planning educational and exciting activities based on the new common core standards for the ensuing school year.

Thank you for your support and cooperation. Together we can make this year’s fifth grade a fulfilling and rewarding experience. I look forward to meeting with you at Back to School Night.

Sincerely,

Ms. Loe

Dear Parents,

We are off to a great start for the 2014-2015 school year. The students and I are enthusiastic and eager to begin our year.

On the first day of class in Loe Skyway, your child will work to create a classroom community; which will be the premise of our policies throughout this year. We will design our homes within the community and develop community rules, or a constitution; which will ensure that our classroom runs smoothly.

I follow a whole class “point” system. We have a Loe Skyway fund wherein students can earn “points” toward a desired event. In Loe Skyway, points are referred to as Brian Kisses. Instead of giving points, I put Hersey chocolate kisses into a jar. The “payoff” amount is 50 Brain Kisses. When the students’ behavior is exemplary in homeroom or any other classroom, I will add Brain Kisses to their fund. However, I also hold the authority to revoke Brain Kisses based on behavior. Students earn CITY once they earn 50 Brain Kisses.

As a fifth grade team, we have also agreed on a rotation discipline policy. It is understandable that everyone has an “off” day- even me! What is important, is that these situations are turned into learning experiences. The discipline policy to be used during rotation and while my homeroom students are in Loe Skyway is called Three Strikes and You’re Out! On the first strike, or infraction of the classroom rules, the student will be given a warning. On the second strike, the student will be removed from the situation. For example, he or she may be asked to sit at another table in the room for the rest of the class period. On the third strike, the student will be asked to return to his or her home classroom. Once with his or her homeroom teacher, the student will be expected to write a letter home following a specific format. That letter must be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to the teacher the next school day. Should a child continue to be a disruption once returned to Loe Skyway, I will first give a warning, next speak with the child, and finally as a last resort, the students will be sent to discuss his or her behavior with

Mr. Warren.

Please review these rules and consequences with your child and any and all care givers. Please be sure that your child understands these rules and that they will ensure a successful year in a desirable classroom community. Both you and your child should sign the statements on the tear-off portion below and return it to class.

Thank you, in advance, for your support.

Sincerely,

Ms. Loe

I have reviewed all rules and consequences with my Parent/Child and we both understand what is expected of the members of the Loe Skyway Community.

Homework Policies

Homework will be sent home nightly and is assigned by each teacher on the team. Our policy is that the students will have no more than one hour nightly. This homework should include studying for upcoming tests and spending time on long term projects. Time management skills are highly emphasized in fifth grade. Occasionally, there may be an exception, but generally this will be the quota. In addition to your child’s daily assigned homework, he or she should be reading a minimum of 30 minutes per night. It is also a good idea to brush up on math facts nightly along with regular math homework.

Any written communication between parent and teacher should be done via e-mail. Please ask your child for any information nightly. Your child will be responsible to turn in homework to the appropriate teacher on the due date. Please help us to be sure that your child understands that homework is his or her own responsibility, including completion and turning it in! In addition to nightly homework, there will be specific projects; which will be assigned throughout the year. Please help your child learn time management in order to complete long-term projects in a timely manner. Please refer to the Homework Policy in our School Handbook for additional information.

Thank you in advance for your support in regards to the homework policies in this classroom.

Sincerely,

Ms. Loe

Dear Parents,

As you may know, Oak Park USD has adopted a “no junk food” policy. We will be held to this policy in the classroom, and I would not want to disappoint any of my students. For birthdays in fifth grade there is a no food policy, including before and after school.

Your child will be eating a variety of different foods this year. Please let me know if you do not want your child eating any specific food due to allergies, etc… Please be sure to make your child aware of any foods that may or may not be suitable for consumption. The more people who know what he or she may or may not eat—the better.

Sincerely,

Ms. Loe

Dear Parents,

I am pleased to take this opportunity to meet you and welcome your child to my class. A good learning experience is built on cooperative effort between parent, child, and teacher. My expectations for conduct and standards for academic growth are high. With your participation in and out of the classroom, we can look forward to a productive, creative, and fun year together.

In the past, I have had many parents volunteer their time in the classroom. I encourage this because it provides the opportunity for more children to receive one-on-one attention.

If you are interested in volunteering, there will be an additional sign-up sheet at Back to School Night. Volunteering can be on a weekly, biweekly, or occasional basis. The more specialized help students receive in class, the more they will learn.

I am excited about this new year. I hope that we can work together to make it one of growth, discovery, and significance for your child.

You can help by giving me any information that will help me understand your child better. I am interested in anything that could be affecting your child and his or her education, although it is not necessary for you to reveal any personal information. Anything you say will be kept in confidence.

I would also like to ask all parents to send me an e-mail this week. I will be adding your name to a class distribution list. Most communication is done via e-mail, so please provide me with an address that you check regularly. In addition, if there is more than one parent per child who wishes to receive these updates, please be sure that I have both addresses.

Again, welcome! I look forward to an exciting year with you as we prepare your child for the next grade level.

Sincerely,

Ms. Loe
