1. Bay – a body of water that is partly enclosed by land (and is usually smaller than a Gulf.

2. Gulf – a part of the ocean or sea that is partly surrounded by land.(It is usually larger than a bay.)

3. Isthmus – a narrow strip of land connecting two large land masses. An isthmus has water on two sides.

4. Lake – a large body of water surrounded by land on all sides. Really huge lakes are often called seas.

5. Ocean – a large body of salt water that surrounds the continents. They cover more than 2/3 of the earth’s surface.

6. Peninsula – a body of land that is surrounded by water on 3 sides.

7. River - a large flowing body of water that usually empties into a sea or ocean.

8. Sea – a large body of salty water connected to an ocean.

9. Source – the beginning of a river.

10. Strait – a narrow body of water that connects to larger bodies of water.

11. Swamp – a type of freshwater wetland that has spongy, muddy land and a lot of water.

12. Tributary – a stream or river that flows into a larger stream or river.

13. Waterfall – when a river falls off steeply, there is a water fall.

14. Wetland – an area of land that is often wet. Swamps and marshes are examples.
