7. Description
This large square two story Italianate brick house is located on the east side of Green Ridge Road southeast of Lisbon. It is on a knoll overlooking the Spring Creek Valley. The house features a low-pitched truncated hipped roof with eave overhang. A wide friezeboard and brackets are underneath the eave overhang. The foundation appears to be limestone construction. The windows are tall 1/1 double-hung windows that are likely replacement windows. The windows have segmental-arched brick lintels and dressed stone sills. The front door is to right on the west façade with two windows to the left of the door. The front door is a single door with segmental-arched transom above that has been infilled or covered over. The entry was once covered by an open porch the “ghost” image of which is visible on the brick wall around the doorway and the first window to the left of the door. There is a smaller brick ell off the rear of the building that is probably original to the house construction; however, there is also a modern frame addition that has been made to the rear ell that is oversized and in poor condition. A concrete block chimney is also a modern addition to the north side of the house. The house is part of a former farmstead, and there is a small gabled horse barn still standing to the south of the house; however, no other historic outbuildings appear to be extant.
8. Statement of Significance
Historically, a house was first shown on this property on the 1869 map when G.S. Hoover was listed as the owner (Thompson and Everts 1869). The 1881 map in this area is illegible; however, by 1895, the property was owned by Michael Blessing (Bergandahl 1895; Warner and Foote 1881). The 1870 Industrial Census for Franklin Township listed G.S. Hoover as a cooper making barrels in the Lisbon area. Likewise, George Hoover was listed in the 1870 U.S. Population Census as a cooper. This is the same George S. Hoover who by 1878 was listed as a farmer living in Section 24, which is the location of the subject property (Western Historical 1878:710). Unlike other Hoover family members who settled in the vicinity who hailed from Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, George S. Hoover was listed in the 1870 and 1880 U.S. Population Censuses as having hailed from Ohio. His wife, Orphia or Orphy Grimm, also had been born in Ohio as had six of their nine children. The family was in Iowa by at least 1865 when their third youngest child was born. It is suspected that this large brick house was built by the Hoovers in the late 1860s or 1870s to house their large family.
The integrity of this house has been impacted to some degree by the loss of the front porch and the large addition made to the rear of the house. However, the house still retains some of its Italianate details and as a brick building dating from the late nineteenth century appears to have potential for National Register under Criterion A for its association with the historical settlement of the Lisbon vicinity if not also under Criterion C as an example of the Italianate brick houses built in Lisbon, Mt. Vernon and the rural environs in the late nineteenth century.
