Lady Mary Wortley-Montagu

Lady Mary Wortley-Montagu, the celebrated 18th century feminist, pioneer of inoculation and comfortable clothing for women, moved into Middlethorpe Hall in August 1713. Famous for introducing her knowledge of the Ottoman practice of inoculation against smallpox to the UK, it was in later life that she was finally praised for introducing the practice here.

Celebrate the life and times of this unique woman with the following commemorative opportunities at Middlethorpe Hall:

On Friday, 15th November from 5.30pm Middlethorpe Hall will host a Black-tie Dinner and Lecture to commemorate Lady Mary’s arrival.

Guest speakers, TV Broadcaster & Food Historian Ivan Day will be joined by Peter Brown, MBE Director of the York Civic Trust. The evening will start with a lecture recollecting the life in York during the reign of Queen Anne, the sophisticated court cooking and the stunning works of art the food was served on.

Head Chef Nicholas Evans, with the advice of food historian Ivan Day and working from original recipes, will re-create a refined supper in the style favoured by Lady Mary when she entertained distinguished guests such as the celebrated architect and playwright Sir John Vanbrugh, Lady Betty Howard and her sister. Guests can expect The Queen’s Potage – containing partridge, almonds, pistachio and pomegranate followed by Boucans - Veal with York Ham, truffle and mushrooms.This lecture, four-course dinner including a Champagne reception and accompanied by wines in the style of those served at the time is priced £89 per person or £164 per person with an overnight stay (based on two people sharing) inclusive of breakfast the following day.

Experience a visit to the National Trust’s Middlethorpe Hall in York– still the ‘very pretty place’ Lady Mary Wortley Montagu described in one of her letters exactly 300 years ago when she moved into the Hall in 1713. This break is priced £499 per night – subject to availability based on two sharing. Available Sundays to Thursdays until March 2014.
