The J. Paul Getty Trust
The J. Paul Getty Trust, the nation’s third largest foundation with $5.5 billion in investment assets, is seeking a senior investments analyst in private equity and venture capital. The Trust’s Investments Department manages a portfolio of investment firms, and our role is to evaluate, select, and monitor investment managers, who manage investments on the Trust’s behalf.
The position involves two aspects: evaluating potential new investment managers (60%) and monitoring and reporting on the Trust’s current portfolio (40%).
Evaluating potential new managers requires the analyst to use both quantitative and qualitative skills. In its evaluation process, the Trust analyzes the portfolio companies’ financials and uses Excel spreadsheets to evaluate, among other things, revenue growth, earnings growth and changes in debt position. On the qualitative side, the Trust conducts calls with industry analysts, CEOs, and other professionals; and then prepares an investment memorandum detailing the investment rationale for the Chief Investment Officer. The analyst would have primary responsibility for quantitative review, and secondary responsibility for qualitative review and investment memo preparation.
Monitoring and reporting on the Trust’s current portfolio is an internal auditing function that requires the analyst to input data into a database and to perform a check between the database and our official custodian bank, in conjunction with the Trust’s private equity manager. In addition, the analyst prepares a report summarizing investment performance.
The position requires a bachelor’s degree and three to five years of work experience in finance, management consulting, or a related field. Experience in private equity or venture capital is not a requirement. A cover letter explaining your interest in the position, a resume, salary history, and a writing sample are requested.
