Science Week Activity: 2E EB10 Changing Shape
Objectives / Activities / Notesq Sometimes pushes and pulls change the shape of objects
q Stretching is a pull,
q Squeezing is a push
q Observation skills and grouping skills / StarterLook at a range of materials and items. (See list for examples)
Starter Extension:
Go round the room and identify things that can squash and stretch.
Main activity:
Plastic bag experiment. (Cut strips of plastics 10cm * 1cm)
Ask pupils to pull them apart very slowly. They will feel them stretching and pulling. Eventually they will snap into two.
Get them to stick all the strips on a sheet with sellotape.
At least one (Eg Acetate) will not stretch but bin liners will. This will give a very good “graph impression” without doing anything else.
This can be exemplified with larger strips (20cm * 2cm) that you do as teachers and stick on the board.
