Safety Rules for Art Studio

At all times when I am working in the Art Studio, I will follow the stated safety practices outlined below. While in the studio I will always think about the following safety precautions;

1. Exercise care when using a dremel tool, carving, sawing or using any other electrical appliance or gouging tool that cuts, including the paper cutter and mat knives.

2. Know the exact location of first aid equipment and how to use it.

3. Only use spray adhesives, fixatives, and spray paint outside the studio where there is adequate ventilation.

4. Place such things as purses, book bags, coats, sweaters, and extra books in lockers or in the cubbies provided for storage they should never be placed on the floor where they can be tripped over or block the isles in case of emergency.

5. Help keep the art studio clean at all times…the last 5 minutes of class will be dedicated to cleaning the area for the next class that will use the space.

6. Dispose of waste materials according to the instructions set forth by the instructor.

7. Use the fume hood located in the back corner of w282 when directed to do so such as when spraying or firing ceramics in the kiln.

8. Use good judgment and care when working in the art studio…remember your choices affect others around you.

9. Avoid touching hot objects like glue guns or the kiln when it is hot.

10. Read the labels on all bottles and containers to make certain that they do not contain harmful chemicals. Use them appropriately or not at all.

11. Always replace the lid or top of any bottle or jar containing chemicals. If it is missing tell the instructor immediately.

12. If a container does not have a label report it to the instructor immediately no exceptions.

13. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before leaving the art studio.

14. Immediately report all physical and chemical injuries to the instructor, no matter how minor the injury seems to be (including rashes or headaches)

15. No fooling around or bullying will be tolerated in the studio…we foster a fun safe environment for students to work and express their ideas free of harassment or put-downs.

16. If you have a problem with a student or assignment tell the instructor before the situation escalates out of control.

17. All SHS rules stated in the student handbook must be followed while working in the art studio.

18. Please respect the work and materials of others we share this space with many other students so respect it.

19. All spills need to be cleaned up immediately no matter how small and must be reported to the instructor.

20. Remember safety first at all times and always ask for assistance if you do not know how to properly use a tool, and shut down all equipment before walking away from it.
