President – Bud Brant

From the President

Bud Brant

I hope everything went well for those of you that went to the river, and for those of you that did not feel so good, I hope you are feeling better. Congratulation’s to Nick Meyer, Ron Overman, and Brent Kearney on their success at the river.

ABA changed their tournament from San Vincente to Otay, the same day as our Otay tournament, Saturday, June 3rd. If you have special spot at Otay, you may want to get to the lake the night before the tournament. It is always challenging to have a competitive series like ABA to contend with on the water.

Our next two months’ general membership meetings dates have been changed. PLEASE NOTE: The June meeting will be on Monday May 30th, 2017 at 7:00 and the July meeting will be on Tuesday June 27, 2017 at 7:00. Both meetings will be at the same location we have all our general membership meetings at in La Mesa. If you cannot get to the meeting, be certain that you call Buck so he can get you signed up for the next tournament.

Our club picnic will be on Saturday, June 17th, at Santee Lakes so be sure to come out and join in the fun. Nick Meyer is running the event. Let’s all make it a point to contact Nick to see what you can do help with the picnic.

Vice President – Ed Byrd

FROM THE V.P.

Had a great time at the river tournament! The weather was pretty good…not too cold in the morning and not too hot throughout most of the day. Prefishing was a lot of fun, though it got tougher on Friday and even more so on Saturday. Something to consider would be a Monday-Tuesday tournament for next year. No conflicts with other tournaments and little or no jet skis and power boats.

The annual Bassmaster picnic is coming up on June 17th. This is another event that we can all look forward to. It will be at our usual location, the island Lake 5 at Santee Lakes. There’s something for everyone including a casting contest, washer toss, kids’ games, and even games for the women. The washer toss games will be a little different, being similar to the casting contest. A fee of $5 per team will be charged, with another $5 if your team wants a onetime do over if you lose. Also, if you can, please bring something for the big raffle!

For the picnic, the club will be providing hamburgers and hot dogs with all the fixings, chips, water and sodas, and plates and utensils. Participants are asked to bring a side dish to share or a dessert. There will be a signup list at the meeting so indicate how many people will be in your group and what you’ll be bringing. One thing that we may need is an extra barbeque, so if you have one, contact Nick Meyer (who is in charge of this event).

Please remember these events need your participation! Attend them and support them with donations and by buying raffle tickets.

Finally, I’m working on getting a night tournament organized. Getting a night tournament at San Vicente doesn’t seem possible, as there’s a California Fish and Game registered event every weekend there. The best possibility seems to be El Capitan on September 1st. We’ll discuss this further at the meeting. Remember that there is a $750 dollar fee to “rent” the lake for the night from the City of San Diego, and a $60 fee for the permit from the State. To break even, with no payouts, we need at least nine boats at $100 per boat. If there are at least twelve boats, the some money would go to the club. Any payback depends on the number of boats over nine that attend. Each boat must have at least one Bassmaster and the usual night tournament rules will be in effect.

Here are the upcoming events:

EVENT IN CHARGE DATE

·  Picnic Nick Meyer June 17

·  Bunco Bud and Donalea Brant August 19

·  Night tournament Ed Byrd September 1/2

·  Year-end banquet Ed Byrd December 10

See you at the meeting on the 30th!

Ed Byrd

Tournament Director – Buck Billock

Howdy

Well fellow Bassmasters it looks like I missed a good trip to the river! So to recap our winner was Nick Meyer with 32.85 lbs, 2nd goes to Ron Overman with 29.71 and third is Brent Kearney with 25.45. Good job guys! Day 1 big fish goes to Cole Wright with a 5.36 big bass that just edged out Ron Overman who got even and took the day 2 big fish honors with a 6.41 mama.

Our next tournament is at Otay on the third. Good luck to all. A sign up sheet went around at the last meeting and I will bring that to the meeting on the 30th for any add-on's or changes along with who is or is not in the big fish pool.

I have to say thanks to who all helped with the weigh in at the river since I wasn't there. I will have weigh in slips for those fishing the Otay event.

Treasurer – Zoé Gardner

From the Treasurer’s Desk: Zoé Gardner

Hi Everyone,

We’re headed to the half-way point. Please keep those checks coming. I do have a few people running a bit behind on their dues. It doesn’t leave much wiggle room if our general membership meeting is this Tuesday and the tournament is Saturday. If you can’t make the meeting ask a buddy to get you current to be eligible for the draw.

I’m not sure what the e.t.a is on the rod sleeves. I’m hoping Jeff will have them for our upcoming meeting. Bring extra money if you are interested in buying them for a good price.

Short report this month. Looking forward to seeing you all at our meeting and at Otay. Greg will be sitting out the next few tournaments, so I appreciate the opportunity to try and catch up. Probably still won’t happen, but I’m going to try!

Take care,

Zoé

Membership Chairman – Greg Gardner

MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN: GREG GARDNER

Hello San Diego Bassmasters. This is your crippled up old Membership Chairman. I’m sitting at home for 6 weeks after my shoulder surgery. Doc says it will be 3 months before I can start getting my strength back and my jerking arm back into action. And I will be back. Remember what Bob Cook taught us: “Old age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill.” Believe it!

Currently we are at 41 active members, 4 family, 2 inactive, 7 lifetime, 8 honorary and 10 at large. That’s a 72-member extended family.

Right now we have one prospective: John Williamson. John and I were fishing buddies back in the 1960’s. We walked all our lakes before most of you were born. He has been prefished by Joe DeSalvo and has been given a positive report. At our next meeting John will go into the draw for his “tournament prefish.”

See you at the meeting,

Greg

GREG GETS ‘ER DONE!

Greg Gardner had surgery on his right shoulder on May 17 at Sharp Outpatient Pavilion. Instead of using a cadaver graft, the surgeon was able to repair a large tear in the rotator cuff by using anchors and sutures. The sutures will come out on Tuesday, May 23. Recovery can take from six months to one year. The arm mobilizer will be taken off in six weeks and Greg will then start physical therapy.

Nurse Zoé reports the patient is doing well and has a supply of fishing shows to keep him busy. When you can’t go fishing, there’s nothing better than watching someone on TV reel them in. Hang in there Greg and you’ll be pain free and ready to go back to jerking your lures before you know it.

CURSES FROM THE RIVER TOURNAMENT!

Vicki Becker and Terry Chenowth stopped at Dave Mack’s to drop of Juan and ended up breaking a spring on their boat trailer, as they arrived at the river. They could not locate a replacement in Yuma. Knowing they had one at home, they drove back to Santee, picked up the spring and went back to the river. That is devotion!

“Vicki and I want to thank the Bassmasters that helped with the repair to our trailer so we could get on the water for the tournament. Frank Neugebauer, Jeff Carpenter, Joe DeSalvo and Ed Marr all loaned tools, jacks and spent time getting dirty under the trailer getting us going and the others that stopped by to see if anything else was needed….Thanks Guys”

TOO MUCH SUN!

After a day and a half, Jim Putney was not handling the sun very well, so his partner. Cesar Diosdado suggested they come home, before Jim got to feeling worse from the heat. Yours truly was getting ready to take a flight to Apache Junction, AZ to visit my friend, Mikki Wheeler, when I got a phone call from Jim, saying they were heading home. Jim’s doctor says his problem is his age, which is a hard one to accept.

MORE PROBLEMS!

Randy Kreiser told me he wasn’t feeling too well after eating dinner at the restaurant at Fisher’s and by Thursday night he and Bud Brant were passing each other in the Hall and were not feeling good at all. Scott Ashley was also sick and they all had eaten at Fishers’ having chicken fried steak, and wondered if there was a problem with the salads. Scotty was so sick during the tournament on Saturday, that he quite fishing early and threw back his three fish. Bud was able to weigh in his fish, but decided to head home early Saturday A.M. after cleaning up the place where they stayed with Randy.

Randy and Swag were on their way home Saturday when a new tire on Randy’s boat trailer blew out about 5:30 P.M. around Dome Valley. They limped into Yuma on three tires and another tire went flat from a nail and a staple. They didn’t have a jack with them, so several other Bassmasters came to their rescue. The new tire was shredded, but they were able to plug the other flat and using the spare, they got home about 1:00 a.m. Swag’s wife picked him up and Randy went to bed. He had to get up early and g

OVERMAN & SLEIGHT FLY THE RIVER!

Ron Overman and Jim Sleight were invited by Cole Wright’s Dad, Steve to take a helicopter ride over the river. Ron stated flying up river they saw many lakes that needed to be fished, but were inaccessible. He said it was a thrill flying 50 feet off the rive at over 100 miles per hour. Brent Kearney got to take that trip the next day.

Following the river tournament Ron and Regina went to Lake Havasu for a few days and catch a few fish to boot. They fished the tournament out of Winsor Landing from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday. There was a three-fish limit and it took 11 pounds to win. Ron and Regina finished in the middle of the pack of 15 boats with 8 lbs. He said they had a blast!

BYRD GETS BITE!

Ed Byrd came home Sunday, with a couple of bites, one on his leg and one on his chest, but was feeling OK. However; about noon on Monday, he started to feel a little run down and decided to take a nap. Cheryl woke him up for dinner and after eating and watching a little TV, he went back to bed about 8:00 P.M. and got up about noon the next day, ate some lunch and went back to bed. He felt better on Wednesday, but had a relapse on Thursday and spent most of that day sleeping again. He has had something like this happen before. He thinks the spiders who live at the river have a strong effect on him.

EL CAJON FORD NIGHT TOURNAMENT NEWS!

Brent Benish and Inder Lopez took 4th in the E.C. Ford tournament on May 20th at San Vicente and won $600. They are now in first place for year end. Other Bassmasters fishing this series are Randy Kreiser/ Steve Swaggerty 9th with Mike Lupo / Larry Ward in 11th place. Bud Brant /Scott Ashley 16th. Other Bassmasters fishing the series are Buck Bullock/Ernie Guillen: Stu Kenson and Nick Myer/Jesse McNutt. Good job guys. Keep it going!

FOREMAN GRATEFUL FOR THE HELP!

Terry Foreman thanked Dave Mack; Ed & Cheryl Byrd and Jim Robinson for helping him empty his and Brenda’s house at Lake Havasu. They packed tons of stuff and moved it to a storage unit he shares with Dave Mack. Due to Brenda’s condition, they have moved back to California and had to rent out their Havasu house. Terry says he could never have done it without all his Bassmasters’ family help.

TREATMENTS TOUGH ON PATRICK

The proton therapy radiation treatments are taking their toll on David Patrick. Barbara told me his mouth is very sore and he has lost his appetite plus he cannot taste his food and he continues to lose weight (40 lbs. so far). He also gets tired easily as he and Barbara went to pre-fish Otay

and had to go home about 3:00 P.M. Dave only has two and a half weeks left to go on his proton treatments. Hopefully you can get back to normal and gain some weight back after that time.

OFF TO ORLANDO, FLORIDA!

Yours truly is leaving May 25th with my twin daughters, Donna and Diana to fly to Orlando, Fl. to visit my grandson Brandon Hoffman in Deland. We plan to visit the beach at Clearwater for a couple of days. From there we will go to Cape Canaveral take a Victory Casino cruise in the evening and spend the night in a hotel. Thursday, June l we will tour Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral and watch a rocket launch at 5:52 P.M. We will then return to Deland and spend a couple days at Brandon’s before flying home on June 3rd. I am looking forward to it as it sounds like a very fun trip. Give Jim a call now and then, so he won’t miss me too much!
