Course Description

Students will engage in lessons designed to obtain understanding of common core standards aligned with eighth grade level mathematics expectations. This course is designed for students on grade level expectations and preparing for entry into algebra I as high school freshmen. Students will use manipulatives, graphing calculators, and cooperative learning structures to gain a better understanding of eighth grade pre-algebra common core standards. Topics covered include real numbers, algebraic expressions and equations, and introduction to linear functions, fundamental geometry tools, and an introduction to probability and statistics.

Powerschool

Students and their parents are encouraged to be aware of their grade by checking PowerSchool regularly. I will also post updated grades within the classroom weekly for students who do not have access to PowerSchool on a regular basis.

Math Homework

Students will be given an individual assignment to practice and develop the skills that were introduced or reviewed in class. Students will be given time to work on their assignment in class, if they do not finish it in class, it will then be required to be taken home to finish as homework and turn in the next school day. All homework assignments will be worth 2 points. Students will receive 1 point or half credit for any assignment that is turned in late. Assignments will be given out at the beginning of the unit in an outline, but are subject to change. Each outline is also posted on my webpage which you can access through the district’s website. Students at all middle school grade levels in the district will be expected to show all workneeded to arrive at the answer, even if they used a calculator to assist them. All homework is to be done on lined notebook paper and done with pencil.

RBE, Tests, and Re-Takes

RBE stands for “Reasonable best effort.” Students are expected to put forth their best effort on all assignments. If I feel that is not the case, I will return work marked “RBE” which means students must redo the assignment to meet the standards and return it within a week. If the assignment is not resubmitted, the assignment will be marked zero credit.

Students may use any notes within their notebook on unit tests and test re-takes. Students may not use their notebooks on the common assessment which will occur at the end of both semesters.

Any unit test may be redone if you are not happy with the grade, provided that you receive an hour of tutoring and develop a plan of action sheet with me. In most cases, students have one week from the day the graded test is returned to you. I am available for tutoring before or after school on Tuesdays and Fridays. Students need to set up a time with me in advanced, to make sure I don’t have any required meetings or conflicts.

Absences

Students are responsible for attaining missing work due to an absence. Students will need to copy notes missed directly into their math notebooks. If a student still has questions or needs further guidance, he/she may stay after class to discuss it with me or set up a time before or after school to receive further guidance. Assignments will need to be checked and turned in to the absent tray in a timely manner.

Tardiness

Students are expected to be on time for class. If a student is late, he/she is expected to enter the room appropriately without disruption and result in a signature in the behavior log. If being tardy becomes a chronic issue, it will be reflected in a lower citizenship grade and/or an office referral.

Restroom/Hall Passes

Students are encouraged to use the bathroom and gather materials from their locker during passing time. Lockers, bathrooms, drinking fountains, and most classes are within a short walk from my classroom. With the short class periods every minute counts. I encourage students to use their class time wisely along with their passing time between classes. Within reason, students may use the restroom or go to their locker as needed, provided the trip does not disrupt the learning environment or instructional time. Students must get permission before they leave they leave the classroom. I have the right to deny permission if I feel it is unnecessary or the privilege is being overused. Abuse of this privilege will receive disciplinary action.

Plagiarism and Cheating

Any work turned in must be your own. If a student is caught plagiarizing, the result will be parental notification and a zero on the assignment. Repeat offenders will be referred to the office. Cheating is strictly prohibited. This includes copying another student’s work for this class or any other, as well as copying answers from tests and quizzes. The penalty for cheating is parental notification, a zero on the particular assignment, and a possible office referral. This includes subject areas other than math!

Classroom Rules:Follow the PACK!

Pride:I respect myself, others, and property

Ambition:I am prepared for class and put forth my best effort

Cooperation:I cooperate with all students and staff

Kindness:I show kindness and compassion to all

Any inappropriate classroom behavior will result in behavior log signature. Three signatures in one week will result in a lunch detention. I will enforce all Code of Conduct rules as stated by the district and Rolland-Warner administration.
