Quilt Artist Adds Her Own Style to Traditional Quilts

We welcome Leigh MacDonald, a fiber artist, quilting instructor and pattern designer, as our August speaker. Leigh has been sewing since junior high school, but did not discover quilting until 1990 when she took a hand piecing class at a local quilt shop. After moving to Ohio, she entered her first quilt in an area quilt show in 1994 and received Judge’s Choice which then started her quilting career.

She has been teaching quilt classes since 1995. Her classes are based on traditional techniques, but emphasize color, inventiveness and imagination. She encourages students to try new ideas or techniques. The classes are thorough, supportive and lighthearted.

Leigh’s inspiration for designs come nature; birds, animals or landscapes often appear. A variety of techniques are used such as hand painting and dyed fabric, hand and machine embroidery, beading and collage.

Leigh will tell us about her new book “Adventure in Circles” which will be published right around the time that she is with us. Leigh will be coming back on Saturday to teach a class based on her new book.

She has a wonderful website that displays a small part of the talent that she has. You can view her work at adventuresinquilting.com.

A Note from the President

What a productive and creative summer this has been. We already have had two workshops presented by extraordinarily accomplished quilters, Vikki Pignatelli and Cathy Franks. We thank Kathy Bean for hosting at her house the Pignatelli workshop. And we were also pleased with the space at the church where we held the Franks workshop.

There was another great opportunity for any of us to go to Columbus to attend the NQA show, take classes, buy from the vendors and just marvel at the wonderful quilts on display. Kate Burch and Maggie Marziale won awards for their quilts.

The week before NQA, I went to Columbus to the Quilt Surface Design Symposium for two days of classes. That was a great experience and I met a wonderful dyer from the Seattle area who brings her dyed fabric each year. I joined her “yard a month” club!

And don’t forget that we have one more workshop coming up with Leigh MacDonald.

So now it’s time to settle down and put all these techniques and fabrics into play.

Our board meeting is on August 4th at 6 p.m. at the Fairborn Senior Center. All are welcome, especially the executive board and all committee chairpeople.

All this we do for the love of quilting.

Laura Wogoman spends her free time hand dyeing and painting, cutting and sewing fabric and creating majestic art quilts that will be on display at the PCAA. Laura started with batik dyeing, a method of dyeing fabric using wax as a resistant. She took classes in drawing, painting and graphic arts. Her inspiration comes from many different places; such as, abstract shapes, photographs she has taken, sermons or verses she has read, and a desire to be creative in some way.

Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 1–5 p.m. For more information, contact Jamie at 937-456-3999.

Pointers & Tips for Quilting

Spotlight: A great eye-saving tool is a Black & Decker Snake light. It is long and flexible. The light curls around your neck and makes a great spotlight for redwork. Embroidery, etc. No need for a high powered lamp nearby and great for traveling!

Scrapbook Shapes: If you want an unusual heart shape or a square shape, check out the local Scrapbooking shop. They have some interesting shapes that would be great for quilting.

Digital Camera: Sometimes you cannot see what is right in front of your face, so use a digital camera. Place all of your blocks and sashes on the wall and take a digital picture of it. Put the digital photo into your computer and you’ll be able to see where the block placement is most pleasing.

Stabilizing Fabric: If you want to use fabrics paints or fabric pens to decorate a quilt block, try stabilizing it first by ironing on freezer paper to the backside. The plastic side of the freezer paper will temporarily fuse to fabric by ironing it on, and it will peel right off when you are done. This is also great for making quilt labels.

Embellishments: Shaped confetti in little bags make great sequins for crazy quilts!

Dye Check: When pre-washing your material (especially good for reds) place a piece of muslin in the washing machine....that way you will be able to tell if the fabric is really going to run.

Bias Edges: Applying spray starch to fabric before cutting bias cuts, will help keep fabric from stretching and distorting.

Storage: Use tall storage containers with the plastic drawers to sort out different colored fabrics—one color per drawer. They don’t require much space.

Straightening Fabric: To straighten fabric after washing, in preparation for cutting, fold across the bias and pull. Get a friend to help. Pull at the fold and every few inches out to the points.

Quilt Labels: To make sure that the label you add to your quilt cannot be removed, stitch to the back of the quilt before the quilting is completed. Quilt through the label.

Reminder

Quilt pins are available at each meeting from Kim Gros. Each pin is $3, up to 2 pins. After that they are $5 apiece.
