The policies and procedures contained in the handbook are designed to help the school run smoothly so that you will have a successful year at PSHS. The school administration reserves the right to change these policies when deemed necessary.

Your teachers are eager to help you prepare for a successful life, so study hard, and get involved in extracurricular activities. Remember, your success is directly related to your efforts.

It is our belief that the fundamental purpose of Purnell Swett High School is to provide a safe and orderly educational environment in which every student can learn. We believe in the worth, dignity, and uniqueness of all students and respect their right to a quality education. It is our responsibility to provide our students with learning opportunities that challenge, promote, and prepare them to be successful, contributing adults. We believe students learn best when they are engaged and know the relevance of a lesson. We believe daily lessons should foster respect for self, school, and community. We believe high expectations must be established and clearly communicated to students, staff, parents, and community.

STUDENT ENROLLMENT

North Carolina General Statute 115C-366 (a4) requires that parents, guardians, or legal custodians of all students who transfer into the Public Schools of Robeson County or into another school district, provide a statement as to whether the student is, under suspension or expulsion from attendance at a private or public school in this or any other state or has been convicted of a felony in this or any other state. *This does not apply to a student who has never been enrolled in or attended a private or public school in this or any other state.

Providing false information is A CRIMINAL ACT. [General Statue 115C-366(a3).

ACCELERATION

Students who have achieved a grade of “B” or better in advanced courses (as determined by “5” or “7” in the course number level) and who wish to graduate in less than four years may do so provided:

1.  The student’s parents submit a written request for early graduation to the Superintendent.

2.  The student has completed four units of English and three units of math.

3.  The student is informed that taking part in early graduation shall disqualify him/her from participating in the final ranking for Valedictorian and Salutatorian. However, he/she may participate in graduation exercises and shall be recognized for all previously earned honors prior to his/her early graduation.

4.  The student has the approval of the school principal.

5.  The student has the approval of the Superintendent.

REF: Asbestos Management Plan As Required By The Asbestos Hazard Emergency

Response Act

The Public Schools of Robeson County, as part of the requirements of the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act, has submitted an Asbestos Management Plan to the North Carolina Department of Human Resources in Raleigh. This plan contains all the information as required by this Act.

You may review the management plan or obtain a copy for a minimal cost by contacting the school office or the Public Schools of Robeson County during normal working hours. Please feel free to contact my office if you wish additional clarification concerning this matter.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS

Should school be closed due to inclement weather, the information will be reported on local Radio/TV stations.

SIGN-IN/SIGN-OUT

A student may be signed in/out by his/her parent or legal guardian. There are no phone calls to school for signing in a student.

A student will not receive a tardy if he/she is signed in by his/her parent or legal guardian.

A student may also be signed in by a parent designee only if the parent or legal guardian has filled out a permission form prior to sign in or sign out. This permission form is not sent home and must be filled out at the sign in/sign out desk.

TELEPHONES

Office phones are for business purposes. If student has an emergency then they will be allowed to use the phone. These phones are for emergencies only not to call parents to notify them of pick-up time, early dismissal, to bring money or lunch, or any other nonemergency.

MESSAGES

Although the school will cooperate fully in the delivery of emergency messages only, other messages or items cannot be delivered to students during class

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT

We, at Purnell Swett High School, are looking forward to a great season. As a member of the Southeastern “AAAA” Conference, we offer 31 sports for men and women. This is a huge task and we will need your help to make the 2015-2016 school year a success. There are several items that you may help with.

The purpose of athletics at any school is to provide extra-curricular activities after the school day. To be successful, you must have an athletic program that students have an opportunity to participate in.

Academics must be first and athletics are just as they are stated: Extra-curricular in all respects and if kept in proper perspective, will make the high school experiences more enjoyable along with having tremendous carry over value.

In order to participate in athletics, we must follow certain regulations made by the NCHSAA. To be eligible, the following must be met:

-Must be in attendance 85% of previous semester

-Must have passed a minimum load of work and meet local promotion standards set by the LEA.

-The athlete must pass three courses per semester and must pass English to be eligible at the

beginning of the next semester or the next school year.

-A student cannot participate if his 19th birthday comes on or before

October 16, 2015.

Any student with a drug/alcohol violation according to PSRC Board Policy during this school year will not be eligible to participate in athletics for the remainder of that sport season. He/she will be eligible for participation in the next sport season. Any student who quits a team becomes ineligible to try out for another team until that season is over.
