IMATHEMATICS II MAT0124
PROJECT (POPBL) FOR MATHEMATICS, SEMESTER 2, 2017/2018

PROJECT (POPBL) FOR MATHEMATICS II (MAT0124), SEMESTER II, 2017/2018

*Notes for instructor and students.

HOW TO CONDUCT POPBL?

·  Project Oriented Problem Based Learning (POPBL) is student oriented learning approach, students are supposed to seek information needed independently and think analytically to solve the given problem, without much supervision from their lecturers.

·  The objective of POPBL is to encourage students towards self-directive study, able to work collaboratively with other colleagues to complete the task given, while the teachers act as facilitator.

·  Using POPBL approach, students should be able to get deep understanding on the certain subject where they learn through solving problem, besides gaining effective communication skills to convey ideas and helps students to develop creative and independent thinking in solving a problem.

HOW TO INTRODUCE TOPICS FOR PROJECT OF MAT0124 ON DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS.

(a)  Use a real-life problem (preferably related to CFS students) that does not have a single or pre-determined solution which enable students to develop a variety of answers.

(b)  Students should relate and highlight the Mathematical concept used when solving the problem.

(c)  Students should focus on only one area of Mathematics, which is DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS, when solving.

(d)  The project guideline and rubrics should be given and read thoroughly prior group discussion (suggest to be given in week 1).

DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS

Learning outcomes:

1.  Organize, analyze and present data using statistical methods.

2.  Apply the knowledge learned and relate to everyday life.

Instructions:

The project is split into 4 phases;

(1)  Identifying title for project

(2)  Do survey or research

(3)  Write report.

(4)  Oral presentation.

GANTT-CHART OF PROJECT

# / Action / Descriptions / Remark
1 / Forming a group / ·  Form a group of 5 or 6 students. Identify the role for each team member; group leader, secretaries, research coordinators, etc.
·  The group leader need to read the instructions, the rubrics and requirements needed in the project to all members.
·  All members need to acquire extra knowledge about Descriptive Statistics from other resources beside your textbook. / By week 1
2 / Identify title of project / a)  Discuss the issue/topic given by your teacher.
b)  State the objectives of what to explore.
3 / Designing a survey form / a)  Propose a list of questionnaire (4 to 5 questions) and use it as a survey form to collect data from sample of respondents. The main question must relate to the issue/topic imposed earlier.
b)  The questions in your survey form should gather enough information needed to answer the main question and some other support questions relating to the main issue/topic given.
c)  Make sure you collect enough information needed to write in the conclusion later.
d)  Identify the variable, its scale of measurement and type of data in the main question.
e)  You just need to organize and analyze the data from your main question only.
At the end of this session, submit
proposal [1]; Title of project
proposal [2]; Sample survey form
3 / Do survey @ collect data / a)  Once your proposals (1&2) are approved, collect data by doing a survey. Identify your source of data.
b)  Suggest the suitable number of sample raw data to represent the population and the sampling technique to be used.
c)  Use Information Technologies in collecting data. / By week 2
4 / Organizing data / ·  Propose how to organize the raw data in a table form? Decide whether your data is suitable to be set as Ungrouped data or Grouped data.
·  Discuss on how to construct a frequency distribution table.
·  Submit your proposal [3] which contains; all the raw data written in one page and a suitable frequency distribution table. / By week 3
5 / Written report / ·  Once your proposals is approved, summarized the project work in a written form. Refer to the format and guidelines given.
·  Show and discuss your first draft of the written report to your instructor/lecturer prior its final submission. / By week 4
6 / Oral presentation / ·  Discuss with your instructor/lecturer on how to orally presenting the project.
·  Submit the final written report together with your video of presentation. [Due date 10/12/2017] / By week 5

FORMAT & GUIDELINES OF WRITTEN REPORT

Prepare 10 to 15 pages of typed report with format: Font Cambria Math size 12, Spacing: 1.5

General Layout of the project should have the following items:

# / Items / Descriptions
0 / Cover Page / with title, section number, names and matric numbers of group members
1 / Table of Contents / with typed page numbers
2 / Introduction
[> 1.5 pages] / a)  Describe what your project is about and its content coverage.
b)  Explain clearly the objective or issue of what you have to explore.
c)  Based from the main issue/topic as imposed in the main question, what is the data variable, scale of measurements, types of data, sample, population, source of your data, sampling method and etc. Explain.
d)  Describe the Information technology used when collecting the data.
e)  Explain your difficulties or restrictions which you encountered when collecting your data/information.
[Try to use many statistical terms in the explanation]
3 / Content / ·  Typed all the raw data collected from the main question in a page. Explain why the outliers are removed.
·  Explain how you construct the frequency distribution table. What is the method/formula used?
·  How can you display or present the data graphically? Identify the suitable graphs based from your Frequency Distribution table.
·  How to summarize the statistics? How to measure the Central Tendencies and Dispersions? Show and explain all calculations and formulas used.
4 / Conclusion
[> 1.5 pages] / ·  Analyze, interpret and discuss the result obtained from the calculations. How do your data cluster? How do your data spread? Elaborate.
·  Elaborate and comment on the findings. Relate the overall results to the objective or aim of your study.
·  Give suggestions for improvement.
·  Include Islamic values or perspectives in your report. Give only one hadith or translation from Qur’an if necessary.
5 / References / Websites and books. Use correct format of quoting.
6 / Appendix / All proposals and sample survey form.

REGULATIONS FOR ORAL PRESENTATION
