PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Cari amici,
In spite of the extreme heat recently, we are going ahead with our annual peach picking and visit to the Blackthorne restaurant in Upperville on Sunday, August 15. Gene La Colla has further details on Page 6. The peaches are very good as Gene, Joe Saia,Tony Finocchiaro and I confirmed first hand last week.
On a sad note, Carlo Mignani’s mother passed away. She was 91. Carlo proceeded to Rome in time for the funeral. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mignani family.
There will be no regular lodge meeting in August, but there is good news regarding the September meeting: Lucio D’Andrea was successful in confirming a reservation for the Knights of Columbus hall at St. Mary’s church for Saturday, September 11. Directions will follow in next month’s newsletter. Thank you, Lucio, for your diligence in securing this meeting space.
Stay out of the sun, drink plenty of liquids and avoid all exertion until this heat passes – and it will.

NO AUGUST LODGE MEETING – PEACH PICKING INSTEAD
Following a tradition the lodge has observed for the last several years, there will not be a regular meeting of the lodge in August. Instead, on August 15, there will be an opportunity to pick peaches and have lunch at the Blackthorne. See Page 6 for all the details.

FERRAGOSTO CELEBRATION
The Abruzzo and Molise Heritage Society will celebrate the annual Ferragosto on August 15 at Villa Rosa, Mitchellville, Md., and other organizations are invited to join in celebrating the event. Villa Rosa is located at 3800 Lottsford Vista Road and can be reached by phone at 301 459 4700. It is a great facility with covered pavilions.
The hours are from 11:30 to 6:00PM starting with the celebration of a mass in the Villa Rosa Chapel. Ferragosta starts at 1:00; popular music and entertainment will be provided; there will be bocce, briscola and card games, etc. Bring your own lawn chairs if you wish.

Neorealist Director Roberto Rossellini (1906-1977)
Roberto Rossellini’s wealthy father built the first cinema in Rome. The family lived on Via Ludovisi where Benito Mussolini had his first Roman hotel in 1922. Their sons, Roberto Rossellini and Vittorio Mussolini, were close friends. In 1940, Vittorio Mussolini gave Roberto Rossellini his career break by signing him to direct three full length feature motion pictures. They were fascist propaganda movies filmed in cooperation with the Italian navy. During this time, Roberto Rossellini discovered gifted writer Michelangelo Antonioni who wrote “Un Pilota Ritorna” (1942).
The 1943 liberation of Rome forced Rossellini to self-produce movies. He found an unknown script writer named Federico Fellini, an unemployed actor named Aldo Fabrizi and his brother, Renzo Rossellini, compiled the music. It took Rossellini two years to raise money through credits and loans. To finish, he sold some personal belongings to buy short ends of film stock. This crude, spliced feel perfectly matched the plot of the Italian underground resistance movement. The result was the Cannes Film Festival grand prize winning “Open City” (1945). More international success followed his next film, “Paisan” (1946), nominated for best original screenplay at the Academy Awards and winner for Best Foreign Film at the British Academy of Film. Also, he received this fan letter:
Dear Mr. Rossellini,
I saw your films, “Open City” and “Paisan” and enjoyed them very much. If you need a Swedish actress who speaks English, who has not forgotten her German and who in Italian knows only “Ti amo,” I am ready to come and make a film with you.
Ingrid Bergman
With this letter began one of the best known love stories of the 1950s. During this joyful period of their lives, with Bergman and Rossellini at the peak of their careers, the Italian Cultural Society is showing “Dov’e La Liberta?” as its September film of the month (1954). In the film, Roman barber Salvatore Loiacono (Toto) is being released from Portorino prison after 22 years for a crime of passion. He tries to do legitimate work by attempting to work at a dance marathon, a boardinghouse and at his in-law’s slaughterhouse. To his dismay, he encounters one deceitful person (Vera Mulnar) after another (Nita Dover) and finds his family (Franca Faldini) is even worse. Salvatore realizes his only chance to live with respectable people is to break INTO jail! Roberto Rossellini stays true to his Neorealism roots by using authentic locations and real townspeople instead of actors in the background. Renzo Rossellini adds the soundtracks and introduces fresh talent in the form of a young producer named Dino De Laurentiis. PEACH PICKING AND LUNCH – AUGUST 15
In lieu of our August general membership meeting, the lodge is sponsoring an outing on Sunday, August 15, to Hartland Orchard and lunch at the Blackthorne Restaurant. Here are the details:
Peach picking at Hartland Orchard is $10 a peck;
We will meet at Courthouse Plaza Shopping Center just before the new library on Old Lee Highway west of St. Leo’s Church at 10:30 AM;

DIRECTIONS
To Hartland Orchard: take I-66 West 48 miles to Markham, Exit #18. When you get off the exit, take a right and then the first left onto Belle Meade Lane (284). Look for the Hartland Orchard signs. The orchard is about 1 mile from the exit on the right.
To Blackthorne Restaurant: return to I-66 East and get off at Exit #23 to Route 17 North (Winchester Road) going about 6 miles. Turn right onto Route 50 and the restaurant is on the right about 1.5 miles.
