POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE is a purple granular powder. Potassium Permanganate, KMnO4, is a caustic alkali organic oxidizer. Treats ciliates, flukes, skin ulcers, clears pond of organic debris and will oxidize toxic hydrogen sulfide to make it nontoxic.
CAUTION Overdosing will kill your fish. PP will stain everything including your hands and clothes. Wear gloves and do not breath the powder. PP kills bacteria so bypass filtration. As PP is an oxidant (usesO2), increase circulation during treatment by adding air stones. PP is for ornamental fish only; not food fish. Do Not leave the pond – watch your fish for signs of distress. Stains everything purple.
DOSEAGE 1.5 TO 2.5 PPM (1.5mg/L to 2.5mg/L)
Add 1 ¼ tsp per 1,000 gal water to obtain 2PPM (1 level teaspoon holds 6 gm)
PROCEDURE Bypass filtration, increase circulation/aeration. Dissolve PP in a plastic container of water, then add this solution uniformly all around the pond, dispensing slowly to avoid any “hot spots” of PP. The color of the water will turn purple if it is low in organic matter and pinkish if the organic matter is high and tea or amber when the PP is used up.
After 1 or 2 hours, if the watercolor is “tea” or amber, add a second dose at the same initial rate. If there is still some residual pink color, do not add any more PP at this time. After 3 or 4 hours have passed and if the watercolor is tea or amber, add a dose at the initial rate. At the 5th or 6th hour uniformly dispense Hydrogen Peroxide 3% (1 qt per 1000 gal water) around the pond to deactivate the PP. Wait 1 more hour and turn on filtration.
For Flukes: a single dosage must be done on day 1, day 4, day 7, and day 10. Turn on the filter 6 hours after each treatment until you start the next treatment.
For Ciliates a single dosage every day for 5 treatments. Turn on the filter 6 hours after each treatment until you start the next treatment. Do not add the hydrogen peroxide until the last treatment (Hydrogen peroxide has a latency of 3 days)
NOTES
At any time that you feel that your fish are in distress, you can add the Hydrogen Peroxide to stop the PP’s reaction.
This protocol is OK with 0.3% salt in your water.
Do not use with Sodium Thiosulfate as this chemical can stop the PP reaction.
Stains everything purple.
US gallons to be treated X PPM X 0.0038 X Drug Purity = grams to be added
Ex 1000 gallons X 2 PPM X 0.0038 X 1 purity = 7.6 grams
