Press Secretary

Position reports to: Executive Director

Position Location: Washington, D.C.

Friends of the Earth (FOE) is looking for an energetic and experienced candidate to help build its profile with the media, activists and donors. The Press Secretary will be responsible for communicating with the media, writing and implementing communications plans, and overseeing organizational messaging and branding. The Press

Secretary will handle media for both our Washington, DC office and Bluewater Network Division in San Francisco.

Background: Friends of the Earth-US is a national environmental advocacy organization which is the U.S. voice of an influential, international network of grassroots groups operating in 71 countries. Founded in San Francisco in 1969 by David Brower, Friends of the Earth has for decades been at the forefront of high-profile efforts to create a healthier and just world.

Specific duties will include:

· Proactively develop ongoing relationships with print, broadcast and online media.

· Develop short and long-range communications strategic plans and work with staff to execute those plans.

· Write and edit press releases, op-eds, briefing materials and other press materials.

· Organize media events and opportunities.

· Monitor FOE’s profile in the media and online.

· Field media inquiries and serve as a FOE spokesperson.

· Prepare staff for interviews and other public and media appearances.

Requirements

· 5 years experience in communications and media with a focus on traditional and new media.

· Experience with issue advocacy campaigns, particularly with environmental issues.

· Excellent writing skills and attention to detail.

· Ability to work individually or in a team setting.

Health and Environmental Campaigner

Position Reports to: Director of Domestic Programs

Position Location: Washington, D.C.

Friends of the Earth (FOE) -U.S. is seeking an energetic and experienced campaigner to help lead the organization’s efforts to reduce the human and environmental exposure to toxic chemicals. This position will be the lead staffer on our efforts to remove toxics from personal care products and fight the reckless introduction of nanotechnology in the environment. An ideal candidate must have grassroots and on-line organizing experience, and a desire to fight corporate power.

General Responsibilities:

· Develop strategies to fight for the use of cleaner and less harmful chemicals that can decrease impacts on public health and the environment.

· Use traditional and online organizing and advocacy techniques to create public awareness about toxic consumer products and nanotechnology.

· Develop and maintain relationships with appropriate regulatory and other agencies, public officials, environmental and public health groups and other organizations, coalitions, and interested parties as needed to mount effective public campaigns.

· Develop public education/media campaigns. Write or work with others to produce campaign-related public education materials, such as press releases, web alerts, and e-activist alerts.

Experience, Skills, and Attributes: This position requires experience in grassroots and online organizing and advocacy; knowledge of environmental health issues, and an ability to conduct research, advocacy and campaign activities. The candidate must have the ability to communicate complicated policy issues in concise and clear language. Some travel required.

Salary and Benefits: Salary range $30,000-$40,000 based on experience. Benefit package includes health care, paid vacation, sick leave, and an employee contribution-based retirement plan.
