The Hong Kong Classic Mile

The Hong Kong Classic Mile is a traditional lead-up race for the Hong Kong Derby. It was initially named the Hong Kong Classic Trial and started out as a Hong Kong Group Three race. In 2001 it was renamed as the Hong Kong Classic Mile. In the 1999/2000 season the race was upgraded to domestic Group One status, and since then a number of top class gallopers have made their names in this mile event en route to becoming ‘stars’ of Hong Kong racing. Recent examples include Beauty Flash, winner of the Hong Kong Classic Mile in 2010, who went on to win the G1 Hong Kong Mile in 2010; Lucky Nine, winner of the 2011 renewal and subsequently successful in the G1 Hong Kong Sprint that same year, and the hero of the G1 KrisFlyer International Sprint in 2013 and 2014; Gold-Fun, the 2013 winner, was crowned Hong Kong’s Champion Miler in the 2013/2014 season and has finished second in the past two editions of the G1 Hong Kong Mile; and Able Friend, last year’s victor, who took a giant step towards possible greatness when scoring an emphatic triumph in the 2014 G1 Hong Kong Mile. Since 1992 a total of four Hong Kong Classic Mile victors have gone on to claim the HKG1 Hong Kong Derby: Sound Print (1992), Johan Cruyff (1998), Olympic Express (2002) and Helene Mascot (2008). The 2015 Hong Kong Classic Mile is worth HK$8 million after a HK$2 million increase in total prize money.
