Rollercoaster, Rotherham Education Authority is a game designed to explain some of the physical and emotional changes that happen at puberty. Includes naming of parts, changes, growing up and menstruation. Recommended for years 5 – 8 dependent on your School’s SRE policy.

Sex and Relationships Education, ASDAN for pupils with SEN provides teacher notes and activities for pupils published in the form of separate modules. It covers the key issues and provides a range of valuable tasks that are motivating for pupils. Many pupils will be able to access the cards independently. The teacher notes do not include information on contraception and STIs.

Sex and Sexuality, Franklin Watts, ISBN 0 7496 2457 4 is for pupils themselves to read and look at photos and cartoon strip style stories about body changes, developing relationships and different sexualities. Sensitively and well addressed – good for a school library.

The Anti-Bullying Handbook, Keith Sullivan, Oxford University Press, ISBN 0 19 558388 4 is a valuable teachers’ resource for understanding bullying and considering ways to prevent it. Keith Sullivan has a long and proven track record in this field and the book reflects his skills.

Trust me, MultiMedia, Education and Training Production a high impact 35 minute video backed with a full script and excellent teacher’s manual. Through exploring a young couple’s sex and relationship issues it addresses unplanned teenage pregnancy issues by looking at emotional, social and legal implications from both a male and female perspective.

Many varied case studies, games and activities to promote personal and social skills and descriptions of pupils’ input on addressing sex and relationships education, anti-bullying, drug awareness and behaviour.

President for a day, Creative Teaching Supplies is a computer game that helps pupils to discover the issues and solutions surrounding global issues. The player becomes the fictional president and interacts with a variety of advisers. It’s fun well as being very useful in RE, Geography and Citizenship lessons.

Values in Action, Christian Aid is a thin but highly useful RE pack of coloured posters, teachers’ notes and worksheets focusing on three different people: an Indian Hindu woman, a Jamaican Rastafarian woman and a Ghanaian Christian man.

Workmatters, UNISON et al provides an up to date and comprehensive KS 4 resource for exploring the employment strand of Citizenship

Your future, John Foster and Diane Craven, Collins is a series of pupil and teacher resources for teaching PSHE for 14-16 year olds and follows on from the popular Your Life series.

Set of five SRE booklets from the Family Planning Association: Love S.T.I.N.G.S, 4 Boys, 4 Girls, Is everybody doing it and Abortion. These small, colourful booklets are highly recommended for pupils.

Four books specifically written for teenagers and illustrated with black and white line drawings and cartoons:

Bliss, The Smart Girl’s Guide to Sex, Kerry Parnell, Piccadilly Press is a collection of short and informative answers to questions that teenagers ask. The approach is direct and easy to read and also dispels lots of the myths e.g. you can’t get pregnant if you are on the pill. Young people really like this book, just ensure it is in line with a school’s SRE policy.

Eating, improve your body image, Anita Naik, Hodder Headline with Susie Orbach as consultant. Another book that appeals to young people as it is written in a short, snappy magazine-style but does not withhold important messages such as those concerning for example bulimia and compulsive eating and how to support or be supported.

Don’t give me grief, Elaine Sishton and Charlotte Russell, John Hunt Publishing,explains the basics of why we feel as we do in reaction to grief, loss and change. It covers confrontations, coping with endings, feeling different, physical changes and lots more.

Stress City! Same authors and publisher as above. This book outlines the causes and symptoms of stress and provides potted, but very useful advice on how to cope.

Cards

Strength Cards, St Luke’s Innovative Resources with gentle humorous pictures of animals illustrating strengths such as organised, competent, determined and 45 others encourage pupils to recognise, name and talk about their many strong points.

Games

Alcohol dilemmas, Healthwise, is a card game that gives information about alcohol and allows pupils ways of exploring the options in a wide range of alcohol related situations. Highly rated in local schools by pupils and teachers.

Videos

Alcohol in the dock, Alpha Films is a 20 minute video aimed to encourage discussion about alcohol. Produced by young people it considers health implications, the law, a publican’s viewpoints and finally the opinions of secondary school pupils. A reasonable resource for opening a debate.

Bully for You, Athena Information Management for secondary schools this is a good video with up-to-date scenarios of bullying situations in schools followed by young peoples' discussions. Short teacher's manual is useful.

Colour blind DfES Children & Young People's Unit provides a 20 minute series of interviews and comments on being British, Citizenship and racism. Includes input from Meera Syal, the Dreem Teem and John Denham, then Labour Minister for Young People.

Sound facilitator's pack with motivating exercises. Recommended.

Dead drunk, BBC is a hard hitting, poignant story about a teenager Jay and the effect of alcohol on his life and that of his mother and his friend. Accompanied by a CD with supporting information.

Grief in the family, Leeds Animation Workshop looks at the ways children and young people respond to grief and what adults can do. Gentle, effective and straightforward.

The video and booklet are for adults working with bereaved families and children.

Lifeschool, BBC, is a series of four programmes on SRE looking at sex from the point of view of young people. Recommended for 14 - 16 year olds it is ively and up to date but schools will want to ascertain that all is in line with their school’s SRE policies.

Sex Education, BBC covers research into teenagers’ attitudes to sex, STIs and body images with young people talking freely about their feelings and experiences. It contains much that is stimulating and worthwhile and schools will want to ascertain that all the material is in line with their school’s SRE policies.

Talking about Race, Channel Four engages a group of young people from different cultures who spend a weekend together in Cambridge to discuss race, culture and identity. Excellent material for stimulating class discussions.

The A-Z of Love and Sex, Channel 4 Learning, cover diverse aspects of SRE in very upfront and straightforward ways directly allowing young people to speak for themselves. Accompanied by a resource book and notes. Valuable for promoting discussions. Schools will want to ascertain it is in line with their school’s SRE policies.

The Gap, Young Voice and Arc Theatre Company convincingly shows parents of South Asian and European origin and their teenage children grappling with differing views on 21st century jobs. An excellent resource for looking at family relationships and parenting skills. Accompanied by useful teacher's handbook.

Turning Points, BBC, covers a wide spectrum of SRE issues such as body image, first sexual encounter and STIs for ll- 14 year olds and emphasises where to go for information and advice. Again check it is in line with school's policy.

SEN videos

The Lyric, First Field, has been developed by SPOD to help teachers provide support for 14-18 year old disabled young people. The video is a lively documentary addressing self image, sexuality, relationships, sex. Frank and honest interviews with young people who have disabilities. Very good teacher pack full of activities.

Go for it! Centre for Education and Industry and DfEE is an up-to-date resource pack for work experience preparation which offers a superb collection of workshop ideas with motivating cast studies, photographs, role plays etc.

Safe for all, Stonewall provides extremely sound and pragmatic new guidance for challenging homophobic behaviour and language. It recognises schools’ independence and provides appropriate teaching strategies and methods at different key stages.
