OPTIONS FOR COMPLETING PREREQUISITES for Cal State LB Graduate Nursing

Online Options for all prerequisites:

Cal State Dominguez Hills (www.csudh.edu) Patho course: BSN 345, Comm. Health (if your BS is not in Nursing): BSN 410/411 or Nrsg 420/421; BSN 380/381L for Physical Assessment

Excelsior College (on website, or call 518-464-8500) Patho course - 584

University of Iowa at www.nursing.uiowa.edu also has an approved Pathophysiology course.

Grand Canyon University – Continuing Education at 602-639-8888

University of Massachusetts - online

(These colleges also have statistics and physical assessment classes – please check lists for numbers.)

Additional online Patho courses are at University of Northern Colorado – Nrsg 326 and University of Iowa under Nursing/Pathophysiology course; (CSULB Patho course: Nrsg 305 ).

Patho courses are usually at four year schools but the following community colleges offer approved courses:

El Camino College (Nrsg 210) Santa Barbara City (online) HT 204

Golden West (Bio 160) Moorpark College HS 25

Saddleback (Bio 112)

L.A. Southwest (Nrsg 521)

Santa Ana (Bio 217)

There are many approved statistics courses at community colleges (please call to verify one you plan to take – a CAN STAT 2 course is okay but please send verification that it is such a course), or these at Cal State LB will also qualify: EDP 419, HsC 403/503, Psych 310, Business 310, Math 108.

Choose a physical assessment class at any online or community college or four year school. The one at CSULB is usually closed, however, as it is reserved for our BSN programs. Must be over 30 hours including lecture and assessment. If it is called something other than health or physical assessment, please send description. Golden West, Cerritos, East LA and Saddleback Community Colleges offer physical assessment courses (220, 251 and 102 (with lab), respectively). Santa Monica may also have one.

You may see we also offer physical assessment (312), community health (402) and patho (305) here at CSULB in both semesters and often the summers. However, these are reserved for BSN students and it is advised that you do not take them here. Online courses are the ones most likely to have spaces. In the case of 402, Community Health, you could contact Alison Kliachko-Trafas at at least two months before the start of the semester or summer, as you must contact the teacher and fill out forms as clinical placements will take that long. Our community health is 7 units but other schools often don’t have as many units. It is best to look for classes at other schools as spaces in ours are always last minute. You could try to enter 305 on the first day of class with an Open University form (not recommended for 312 or 402). We request that you do not try to take our 312 classes as those are very full. Thank you.

You may fax any course descriptions of any class you are wondering about (if they are not specifically called physical/health assessment or pathophysiology) to 562-985-2382, attn: Alison. You can also e-mail questions to or to Pam Ford at
