One Pager: Colonial Comparisons

For this assignment you are going to create several mini-posters with both pictures and words and which best express the characteristics of each of the three colonial regions. Each of the colonial regions will have one mini-poster dedicated to expressing information which elaborates on life and the people in the region. The regions are the Chesapeake, New England, and the Middle Colonies. For each mini-poster, use an 8 ½ x 11 or 11 x 14 sheet of paper.

1. Each page will have a map of the region which also shows the colonies which are part of the particular region. The map should go roughly in the center of the page. It can be whatever size you want and it can be as elaborate as you want. The minimum requirements for the map are:

· That it shows roughly the boundaries of the region and the rough boundaries of each colony located in the region.

· That each colony is labeled and the region is labeled somewhere on the page.

2. You need to find a quote from a prominent resident on the region. The quote should have some representative meaning for the colonial region and for the time period prior to 1763. You may put the quote anywhere on the page that you want.

3. You need to decide on a symbol for the region and place that symbol on the page. There are many ways to place a symbolic representation on a paper so pick the placement that best communicates what this region would be noted for.

4. Then you need to present the following information, in some visual expression, in words, or a combination of both. Leave room around the borders of the poster to add questions at the end of your project. The information you need to present is:

· When were the colonies in the region founded? What was the type of each colony?

· What nationalities or ethnicities settled in the region?

· What is the proportion of women to men?

· Is the population predominately young (teens-20s) or older (30+)?

· What was the religious affiliation of the majority of people living in the region? If it split between several groups, say so and name them.

· How much democracy and religious freedom existed in the region? Give specific examples that support your statement regarding democracy and religious freedom.

· What type of government did colonies in this region have?

· What are the primary economic activities/products of the region?

· What are the most prominent geographic features of this region? Consider climate as well as topography.

· What is the relationship of the Native Americans with the people in this region?

5. Finally, around the borders or on the back of each poster, write four questions about the region. They must be critical thinking type questions. Neatness and artistic expression count. These will be shared and questions discussed.
