The Issuing of Spiritual Leader’s Cards by the Commission for Christian Pilgrimages

1. The Spiritual Leader’s Card:

1.1.  is issued to priests and religious adequately prepared for leading pilgrimages in the Holy Land, and gives them the right to accompany and lead pilgrims;

1.2.  does not authorize the holder to receive a salary or engage in commercial activities;

1.3.  may not be requested by travel agents and employees of travel agencies.

2. Requirements for applying for the granting or renewal of the card. The candidate must:

2.1.  be between the ages of 26 and 75 years and be in good physical and mental health;

2.2.  have a vibrant spiritual life and demonstrate exemplary moral conduct;

2.3.  have a letter of recommendation from his bishop or provincial specifically stating that he/she has been sent to the Holy Land for this spiritual mission;

2.4.  have a biblical/theological qualification that is certified by a reputable faculty of theology;

2.5.  have a good knowledge of the geography, archeology, and ancient and modern history of the Holy Land;

2.6.  have an adequate knowledge of English;

2.7.  have good interpersonal and communication skills;

2.8.  have participated in at least 4 pilgrimages as an assistant to an expert pilgrimage tour leader;

2.9.  have participated in training courses or ongoing formation for biblical pilgrimage tour leaders;

2.10.  not be under ecclesiastical excommunication, or convicted in a civil or criminal court.

3. Conditions

3.1  The decision to grant or refuse the Animator ID Card is made at the discretion of the Committee. The committee’s decision is final.

3.2  In the event of incompetence or any misdemeanour on the part of the holder of the ID card, the Commission has the right to withdraw the CARD or refuse to renew it.

3.3  The Animator ID Card will not be sent by post. It may be collected at the Secretariat for Christian Pilgrimages by a travel agent or another authorised person.

3.4  Administrative costs of € 35, US$ 50 or180 NIS are to be paid upon collection of card.

3. Documentation to be submitted:

q The completed application form provided by the Commission for Christian Pilgrimages

q One passport photo

q A curriculum vitae (resume)

q Diplomas / Certificates of biblical/theological studies and/or ongoing formation;

q A recent letter sent by the candidate's bishop or provincial superior stating that he/she has been sent to the Holy Land for this spiritual mission (on letterhead paper, with official stamp and signature, and dated no earlier than 6 months before the request is submitted). The letter must be written in English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, or German.
