Oakwood songwriter to debut album March 24

Bad Sines represents the summation of two decades of writing and performing for Oakwood resident David Burris. Devotees of the Dayton/Cincinnati, OH music scene will likely have heard David performing either solo or with one of the bands with whom he has honed his craft over the years. On Saturday, March 24 at 9 p.m. at the Pavilion Grille at Lincoln Park in Kettering he will be performing with his new band Bad Sines.

Dayton music fans who look beyond radio for pop with substance may have encountered him during his years with Shrug and The Jayne Sachs Band to name just two of the excellent under-the-pop-radar ensembles that have benefited from his presence. Now the tall singer/songwriter has offered up Paper Titan, a platter of twelve sparkling original alt pop gems that defy the strictures of radio playlists while simultaneously sounding quite at home within them.

No musical wallpaper here. Assisted by the world class guitar of Ric Hordinski, formerly of Cincinnati legends Over the Rhine, and a roster of top notch pros, David has produced a disc that can occupy the background as pleasantly as anything on pop radio but which rewards, even demands, closer listening to be fully appreciated. The bittersweet spiritual yearning of “Paper Titan” and the realization that there are, well, better options in “Better” set the tone for the rest of the disc and that tone is intimate, even confessional. “Come Back,” “Just Me,” and “Mud” continue the twin themes of longing and loss but do so with gorgeous melodies that make the melancholy lyrics feel like a warm handshake. The chugging mid tempo rocker “Raining” salts things with a bit of attitude, Hordinski's ace guitar work and Burris's passionate vocals forming a potent duet. Following that appealing head nodder, the moody soundscapes of “Under History,” “Drug,” and “Give In” take over for a bit before yielding to the smooth driving “So Much.” The atmospheric “Get Ready” and “Drug (Trip)” dial things back to intimate for the finish.

Bad Sines will also be celebrating the release of their debut CD Paper Titan on Saturday, April 7 at The Oregon Express, 336 East 5th Street in the Oregon District. The show will begin at 9 p.m.. Paper Titan is currently available on disc or download. See www.badsines.com for more details.
