1. PURPOSE STATEMENT

Nunkuwarrin Yunti aims to promote and deliver improvement in the health and wellbeing of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the greater metropolitan area of Adelaide and to advance their social, cultural and economic status. The Organisation places a strong focus on a client centred approach to the delivery of services and a collaborative working culture to achieve the best possible outcomes for our clients.

The Counsellor/Narrative therapist - Mental Health Recovery position is located within the Mental Health Recovery Team. The Mental Health Recovery team provides counselling and support services which assist people to better manage a wide range of issues including grief & loss, depression, trauma, family and/or relationship matters, and any other issues which impact on psychological, social and emotional well-being. The program also provides holistic, culturally appropriate case work. Narrative Therapists provide support, counselling and education to clients referred through the Primary Health Network, peer agencies, Nunkuwarrin Yunti or other sources of referral.

Under limited direction the primary role of the Counsellor - Harm Minimisation is to:

·  Provide high quality assessments, counselling and support to individuals and their families, including those with complex needs, through evidence based therapeutic interventions.

·  Operate within diverse therapeutic frameworks and modalities including, individual counselling, group work, family inclusive Practice and Narrative Therapy principles

·  Provide social and emotional well-being counselling services and group interventions to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people utilising a Narrative approach in order to facilitate healing and improvements in wellbeing.

·  Participate in the promotion of counselling services which enhance the coping capacity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and individuals and which ensure that services are delivered in a culturally safe manner.

·  Provide education/awareness presentations to the wider community in relation to social and emotional wellbeing improvements for Aboriginal people.

·  Encourage clients to access a range of social health and welfare services, which include other Nunkuwarrin Yunti programs and external agencies.

·  Establish and maintain collaborative and productive working relationships with current and potential stakeholders and partners, both internally and externally

·  Use available information systems and best practice evidence to inform program planning and clinical decision-making, and to evaluate outcomes

2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

Delivery of direct client care / Provide high quality assessments, counselling and support to individuals and their families, including those with complex needs, through evidence based therapeutic interventions.
Operate within diverse therapeutic frameworks and modalities including, Individual counselling, group work, family Inclusive Practice and Dual Diagnosis principles
Work collaboratively with Case Workers, other Nunkuwarrin Yunti staff and external organisations.
Undertake counselling at other service locations as planned/scheduled.
Working closely with identified internal positions such as Mental Health Nurses, visiting Psychiatrists, GPs, Mental Health Recovery Social Workers and Case Workers to ensure a coordinated approach to service intervention.
Participate in case conferences and client care reviews as required.
Be available to colleagues as a source of expert information and ideas
Coordinate, broker and/or deliver in healing activities for clients that strengthen cultural identities, individual capacity and community connections.
Sector and Community Engagement / Maintain established networks with relevant organisations and community groups to encourage a coordinated approach.
Work in partnership with internal and external stakeholders to deliver therapeutic group and information sessions and/or displays at a range of venues and community events.
Coordinate and support the development of resources as required to suit the needs of individuals, families and community to access Social and Emotional Wellbeing support services.
Provide expert advice to external working groups, committees and organisational activities where required.
Service Improvement / Coordinate and undertake ongoing development and implementation of identified projects within Nunkuwarrin Yunti with a focus on building organisational and community capacity to reduce the burden of poor Social and Emotional Wellbeing.
Implement program activities to address identified community health needs in line with program plans, community and organisational guidelines.
Team & Organisational Activities
Maintain positive working relationships with other team members and staff of other Programs.
Work as a member of a multidisciplinary team with commitment to shared ideas and common goals.
Participate in working groups and activities. / Contribute to and support positive team morale by actively and regularly participate in team planning activities and team meetings.
Actively develop and maintain effective internal and external networks in a professional manner.
Contribute to the development and implementation of Program policies and procedures.
Work collaboratively with and support other Nunkuwarrin Yunti colleagues and teams where required.
Contribute to strategic planning activities of the Program.
Participate in internal working groups, committees and organisational activities where requested and/or willingly volunteer to contribute to organisational activities.
Promote and present a positive image of Nunkuwarrin Yunti to other staff, clients and the community in general.
Professional Development / Foster a professional counselling environment through delivering culturally safe services to Nunkuwarrin Yunti clients.
Attend professional development training courses related to effective delivery of Social and Emotional Wellbeing, in particular Narrative Therapy, services.
Attend professional meetings as required such as reflective practice, multi-disciplinary, debriefings.
Participate in training for self care and undertake regular performance development reviews.
Administrative Activities
/ Ensure records of all program activities are documented in line with program procedures and are available to support ongoing program monitoring.
Participate in program evaluation and associated activities aimed at ensuring quality outcomes are archived.
Provide regular statistical and other reports as requested within the templates provided.
Ensure secure management of client data and client files and compliance with privacy policies and legislation.

3. SELECTION CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL – includes qualifications, skills, experience and knowledge.

·  The minimum qualification is a Diploma in in Counselling from a currently endorsed National Training Package.

·  Minimum of three years vocational experience in Counselling/Narrative practice

·  Hold registration with relevant professional body such as the Australian Counselling Association or equivalent

·  Demonstrated understanding of the history and effects of the forcible removal of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander children, and a comprehensive understanding of social and emotional wellbeing issues affecting Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people.

·  Demonstrated counselling skills with experience and knowledge of social, emotional and mental health issues which may include culturally appropriate healing methods, and trauma and grief counselling skills.

·  Demonstrated experience working effectively with Aboriginal people.

·  Experience in managing a large case load of clients with high and complex needs.

·  Excellent organisational and time management skills and the ability to operate autonomously with limited direct supervision

·  Well-developed written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people.

·  Ability to set priorities and monitor own workflow.

·  Computing skills relevant to the position and competent in the use of information and communication technology including MS Office.

DESIRABLE

·  An understanding of multiple therapeutic approaches for example Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

·  Demonstrated Narrative Therapy counselling skills with experience and knowledge in implementing with Aboriginal people

·  Experience in the delivery and design of therapeutic groups

·  4. APPOINTMENT CONDITIONS

Special Conditions and Status

1.  Full time position, 38 hours per week.

2.  The tenurein this position is subject to funding continuing.

3.  Some out of hours work may be required.

4.  Some intrastate travel may be required.

5.  Appointment is subject to a satisfactory National Police Clearance Certificate.

6.  Subject to 6 months satisfactory probationary period unless the appointee is a current employee of Nunkuwarrin Yunti and has completed the required probationary period prior to being appointed to this position.

7.  Salary Sacrifice, Superannuation Employer contribution.

8.  Current South Australian full Driver’s Licence and willing to drive in the course of work activities.

9.  Conditions of employment are in accordance with the terms and conditions stated in the relevant Enterprise Agreement.

5. PERFORMANCE/SKILL STANDARDS

Performance will be measured and assessed against objectives set out during the performance agreement and in alignment with the job and person specifications for the role.
