NORFOLK SRA LEAGUE RESULTS – Week 1

Division One Results

Potters 8 East Anglia 17

Report

With eleven teams now in Division One of the Norfolk SRA Squash Leagues the season has got off to an early start and East Anglia have set down an early marker by winning 17-8 at Potters. The Lime Tree Road club have dominated Norfolk Squash this millennium with teams from the club winning the title in nine of the past ten seasons and with four teams in the top flight for the new season there is every chance that this trend will continue.

However four teams in the same division do present problems as the club have to decide whether to spread their resources evenly over the four teams or whether to put all their eggs in one basket with their strongest players all in the same team and in addition players are not allowed to move from one team to another within the division. This year the club seem to have gone for the second strategy with David Youngs and John Cordeaux, who have won no fewer than twelve Norfolk titles between them playing at the top of the order, the 2004 Norfolk junior champion Ashley Briggs at No.3 with the experienced duo of Steve Mooney and Gary Snelling at Nos 4 and 5.

Against Potters Snelling was beaten 3-1 by David Hall but Both Mooney and Briggs won in straight games against Eric Plane and Paul Field respectively to put East Anglia in control. However Cordeaux lost a nail biting second string match to Rob Hambrook, going down 10-8 in the fifth leaving Youngs to play the first string match against another former county champion, Jamie Goodrich. The Potters player opened up a 2-1 lead but Youngs, who is now the Norfolk SRA President, showed that he is still a force to be reckoned with on court as he recovered brilliantly to win the next two games and take the match 3-2 to give his team what could be a vital victory.
