PRESIDENTS REPORT
2010 will go down as a land mark year for the Nunawading Football Club. After many off field problems early in 2010, we reached a point where some tough decisions needed to be made. We had no committee and a very small playing list but as was shown at the Extraordinary General Meeting, we still had enough people with the passion for the club to move forward.
The decision to drop to fourth division was one that was a necessity. It gave the club a chance to rebuild both on and off the field without the pressure of performing to a level that we could not possibly achieve. As a result the steps that we have taken both on and off the field will leave our club in good stead for many years to come.
One of the first decisions made by the new committee was the appointment of Paul Carbis as coach. The task in front of Carbo this year was not an enviable one. I’m sure at times he must have felt like it was the season that would never end but his leadership both on and off the field has been invaluable in the rebuilding of the club. Carbo’s ability as a coach is first rate and we look forward to continuing the work done this year in achieving our goal of returning our club to great success.
Carbo has been ably assisted this season by an outstanding coaching staff. Col Rule and Cameron Philipson have been fantastic additions to the club. Richie Spurr returned to once again show his abilities with the statistical side of the game are second to none. And finally, the work done this year by our reserves coach Brian Coppock has been second to none. When things were at their darkest, Copsy was continually ringing prospective players, running training and pumping up the club. Thank you all for your fantastic service to our club.
On field 2010 was difficult to say the least, and when you look at some of the numbers at easy to see why. We had over 90 men play for the Nunawading Football Club in 2010, pretty amazing considering we only had around 20 confirmed players at the end of February. This of course meant that nearly our entire playing list did less than 8 weeks of pre-season. From this point we were always going to be behind the eight ball. This meant we were under prepared which led to us having a huge amount of injuries. But rest assured plans are already moving forward to build a strong playing group that with a full pre-season will deliver on field success in the coming years.
It wasn’t all bad news with our playing group this year. The addition of some great people has built the foundation of a strong club culture. Ben Tomazic, Jordan Relf, Rob Horwill and Andrew Gellatly have added pace, skill and youth to our senior line up. As will Tim and Nick Somerville with the benefit of a full pre-season. In the reserves, Nick Tomazic, Alex Small, Leon Dunn, Braden and Nick Kennan, Andrew Irving and Andrew Cullen have added strength and poise. But most importantly all of these men have shown outstanding commitment to our club, both on and off the field. Thank you to all the players who took the field in the maroon and gold this year.
Every year we must also see the end of some careers, but this year sees the retirement of some of the most influential players our club has seen. Midyear Denis Porcellato decided to hang up the boots, Porca was an integral part of our successful teams of 2006-08. Michael Britten was also a big part of those teams as well as a former reserves coach. We thank you both for your service to our club. Jason Philactides played his last game in round 18, Phila was the coach of the 2008 reserves premiership team but maybe more importantly, he was one of the people who at the start of 2010 would not let our great club fall by the wayside and was instrumental in keeping our club alive. James McRae also ended his glittering career this year. Jimma retires as a senior premiership player, senior best and fairest winner, reserves premiership player, a two time reserves best and fairest winner and life member. Above all else Jimma has been an outstanding clubman and an all round top bloke.
Finally one of the greatest clubmen our club has seen played his last game for our club. For nearly 15 years Jamie Shevlin has led our club from the front. Be it as a ruthless player, an uncompromising captain or a selfless committee member, Shev has been one of the most influential people in the history of the Nunawading Football Club. On field he was a senior premiership captain and best and fairest and a reserve premiership captain. Off field he had stints as vice-president and treasurer. Most importantly he has always led our club with honesty and integrity. Shev, you’re a great man but more importantly a great friend. Thank you.
To all players and supporters that may be retiring or stepping back from the club, be assured you will always be a valued part of our club.
Finally I have a few thank yous to make for season 2010;
To our major sponsor, Nathan Small Enterprises, thank you for not only for your support for 2010 but also for your continued support in season 2011. To HPG Engineering, The Harp Hotel, The Tyre Factory, Barbeques Galore and One Stop Shelving, thank you for your continued support over many years. And to Altegra, Dee Ryall for Mitcham, Boags Draught, Fonterra and McPhie Electrics, thank you for your support this year and we look forward to your help in the future.
To the selfless people who have helped throughout the year we thank you. To our fantastic gatekeepers, Margret and Rob, to Ron on the scoreboard, to our trainers Kenny and Emma-Kate, to Ian Campey, Terry Harrop and Paul Jones for your help with the interchange, to Russell Bennett for doing the timekeeping and to anyone else who I might have forgotten. Without your help our club could not run, thank you.
Special thanks also need to go to Bernadette and Craig Somerville, thank you for coming on board at our club and devoting so much of your time. And a huge thank you to Delia and Adrian Meagher, your love for our club is second to none. To all four of you, we could not have been able to keep our club together this year without your support.
I think I speak for all of the committee when I thank three people. To Peter Bailey and Tony Gawne, your support and mentoring has been invaluable to an inexperienced committee. And to Jamie Shevlin, thank you for all the work you have done this year. You’ve been our silent committee member and we couldn’t have done it without you.
Finally to our committee, to Dan Palmer, Aaron Platkowski, Craig Myers, Richie Spurr and Jason Philactides. Thank you for the phenomenal amount of work you have done this year. We would not be here without the work you have done this year.
But here lies the last great hurdle for our club. Off field there is still too much being done by too few. While our committee numbers are up on last year, we still need more help. The last thing this club needs is to fall into the trap that we fell into last year and just expect other people will get the job done for you. The more people we have on the committee and helping around the club the longer we will guarantee the future of our club. So if you want to put something back into the club you play for or if you have any friends or family that you feel could give something to our great club, jump on board and help us build towards,
REDEMPTION 2011

SENIOR COACHES REPORT
What a year it turned out to be for the Nunawading FC. A massive effort from some passionate Nunawading people saw the club come from the brinks of folding to getting 2 senior teams on the park at Glen Waverley on April 10th in Division 4.
We knew from the start of the season we were going to be behind everyone else, but the message to the playing group was to make sure we were competitive.
We didn’t have the playing depth of other clubs nor did we have a proper pre season, but we did find that this fabulous game produces highlights no matter what the circumstances.
Team highlights:
1. Round 4 - after a bad defeat to Sth Belgrave we started finding some form & were competitive against top 5 team Forest Hills, going down by 31 points
2. Round 5 - our first win for the season over Eastern Lions by 14points
3. Round 7 – leading top of the ladder FTG at half time, away
4. Round 12 – beating Surrey park by 63 points
5. Round 17 – leading Eastern Lions at ¾ time by 23 points with a very undermanned team
Considering we didn’t have much success on the ground our club functions were well supported & our mate ship was never questioned.
I would like to thank Scott & the committee for their support. I would also like to thank the Somerville & Meagher families for their awesome efforts this year with meals & functions.
Congratulations to all the trophy winners.
A special thanks to my assistants – Col, Coppsy, Cam & Ritchie for their time & efforts.
Also to Mr. Nunawading… Phila, without your passion we wouldn’t be rebuilding this great club. Lookout 2012…
Paul Carbis - Senior Coach
