SUMMARY – 2013
-Total slaughterings at DAFM plants increased by 99,038 in 2013(1,499,676) compared to 2012(1,400,638).
-The number of Young Bulls killed in 2013 decreased by 22,183 on 2012. Young Bull slaughtering accounted for 25% of the overalladult male kill in 2013 which decreased from 30% in 2012.(P.18)
-Thenumber of Steers killed in 2013 increased by 61,830 compared to 2012accounting for 71% of the overall adult male kill in 2013 compared to 66% in 2012. (P.18)
-The number of Cows killed in 2013 increased by 47,543 on 2012.
-Steer, Heifer and Young Bull carcase weights declined in 2013 by 16kgs, 7kgs and 15kgs respectively compared to 2012. (Section 2)
-Live exports of calves increased significantly by 49,322 to 87,087 in 2013, similar to the 2011 level. (P.21/22)
-The percentage of Young Bulls killed in Quarter 4 decreased from 29% in 2012 to 21%in 2013 (P20)
-Total slaughtering at Local Authority plants increased by 7,351 in 2013 (90,468) compared
to 2012 (83,117).

5. BEEF CARCASE CLASSIFICATION and PRICE REPORTING INSPECTIONS
5.1 Classification Checks
In 2013 there were a total of 1,494,189 carcases of adult cattle (excl Veal) classified. There were a total of 402 control visits conducted in these plants during the yearand 39,875 carcases were checked for conformation and fat during these visits.

5.3 Price reporting
(a)Commission Regulation (EC) No 1249/2008 lays down detailed rules as regards the recording of market prices of adult bovine animals, on the basis of the Community scale for the classification of carcasses.
(b)In 2013, 25 factories reported prices to The Department – A list of these factories is given in Annex 1
In 2013, staff of the Division carried out 52 audits of these factories examining details of payments / returns to producers and determining the accuracy of weekly returns made to DAFM. During the course of each audit, authorised officers checked the following carcase details:
