We will be having a Valentine’s Day Party on Tuesday, February 14. We have 25 students in our class and you can go to my website for the class list of names. http://www.delano.k12.mn.us/elementary-school/gradesstaff/third-grade/mrs.-warne/class-list If your child brings in a treat to share, please make sure that it is peanut free.
Reading:We will be taking the reading test for Jump! on Friday, February 10. Your child may log on to Think Central and listen to the story by clicking on Student EBook. We will begin our next story on Monday. Big Idea: Face a challenge helps us to grow. Essential Question: How do characters affect the plot of the story? We will read The Science Fair, Poems About Science, and leveled readers. The skills/strategies for the week are: proper nouns, idioms, homophones, word endings, -er, -le, and story structure. The vocabulary words are: report, erupt, presentations, creative, educational, certificate, impressive, and charts.
Math: The students will be visiting various math exploration stations while using geometry terms, constructing polyhedrons, and reviewing for the geometry test that will take place at the end of next week. On Tuesdays and Thursdays in our homeroom, students will be taking timed math fact tests at their level.
Writing: The “How To” presentations are off to a great start! The students are learning a lot from their classmates. Our next Writer’s Workshop is a descriptive essay with a focus on using the five senses. Code for the week: If your family has a pet, please send a picture of your pet to school with your child. If your family does not have a pet, your child may bring in a picture of a brother, sister, cousin, etc. or a picture of an animal that they would like to have as a pet.
SWITCH: The students are finishing with Mrs. Petersen for social studies. The students will be with me next week finishing the sound unit and moving on to the light unit.

As parents you can also check in with your child about what he/she is reading each night. I have taught the students how to put a post-it note at the end of each chapter with a 1-2 sentence summary and then before they take the AR test, they can mix up the post-it notes and put them in order while retelling the book.
·  Reading log: The students will be cutting off the bottom strip from the yellow reading card during “I Love to Read” month. They must have their name, total of 140 minutes or more, parent signature, and in the yellow basket by Monday mornings at 8:10. They will receive a carnival ticket for each strip turned in for meeting the above requirements. Students will receive a bonus ticket for completing all four strips.
