Dear Guidance Counselor,
I am pleased to announce the AAYSA Spring 2016-2017scholarship competition. Enclosed you will find the scholarship packet which includes eligibility guidelines, an application guide and checklist and the actual application forms. Please feel free to make copies of this packet and this letter as needed.
While the eligibility guidelines are clearly spelled out in the enclosed information, I do wish to point out a few things. First, selection of AAYSA scholarship recipients is made without regard to race, sex, religion or national origin. Second, competition is limited to students who participated in soccer with a member club of AAYSA and are currently registered as a United States Soccer Federation referee. Third, due to the limited number of scholarships available, students who receive another scholarship which pays all tuition, room and board are not eligible for AAYSA scholarships.
Each year we award scholarships to local high school seniors who are enrolling in a college or a trade school. In order to allow enough time for processing and evaluation, we require applications to be postmarked NLT 1 August2017and mailed to the address indicated in the attached application guide.

SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES
(2016-2017)
A. Eligibility. AAYSA scholarships are awarded annually to select high school seniors to assist them in obtaining college, university, trade or technical school funding. High school senior applicants must meet the following criteria:
1. Must be a graduating senior of an accredited high school or home school program.
2. Must be accepted or anticipate acceptance by a college, university, trade or technical school.
3. Must use the scholarship no later than the following academic year at an accredited college, university, trade or technical school.
4. May not accept a concurrent scholarship that includes all tuition, room and board.
5. Must have been involved in soccer with a member of AAYSA and must be a currently registered referee with the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).
B. Selection Process.
Five independent representatives of the AAYSA community will review, evaluate and score the completed applications. The Scholarship Committee, under the direction of the Scholarship Committee Chairperson, will develop an order of merit list (OML) and identify scholarship recipients. Please note that prior to the evaluation process, all applicant identifiers (i.e., name, address, etc.) are removed from applications. Applications are identified by a number code and all applications are handled in a confidential manner.

C. Recipient Information.
1. Notification of receipt of application will be sent to each applicant.
2. Scholarship recipients will be telephonically notified no later than four weeks after the application deadline
(1 August 2017)
3. Scholarship recipients will receive instructions regarding presentation of scholarships.
4. Upon proof of enrollment, the check will be sent to the student.
5. Any student accepting a full-tuition scholarship is ineligible to receive AAYSA funds and must notify the AAYSA (in writing) of his/her acceptance of a full scholarship. Once this occurs, the AAYSA will award the scholarship to the next applicant on the OML.

1. Checklist.
__a. The Privacy Act statement (page 1 of the application) must be
signed, dated and included in the packet you submit.
__b. The personal data forms (pages 2 & 3 of the application) must
be completely filled out and included in the packet you
submit.
__c. The college/university or trade/technical school data sheet
(page 4) must be completely filled out and included in the
packet you submit.
__d. The high school activities and honors data sheet (page 5)
must be completely filled out and included in the packet
you submit.
__e. The high school volunteer work, job experience and
hobby/interests data sheets (pages 6 & 7) must be completely
filled out and included in the packet you submit.
__f. Each applicant will submit ONE letter of recommendation as
part of their completed application. It will be prepared in
compliance with the guidelines on pages 8 & 9 of this
application packet. Additionally, page 8 of the application
packet must be attached to the letter of recommendation.
__g. Each applicant will submit official high school transcripts
and SAT and/or ACT scores (in a sealed envelope) as part of
his/her application. Please insure that page 10 of the
application is filled out (BY THE APPLICANT'S HIGH SCHOOL
COUNSELOR), and is attached to the high school transcript.
Please note that transcripts must have the issuing schools
seal imprinted on them.

1. Checklist (continued).
__h. The typewritten essay, as outlined in sub-paragraph c of the
Basic Guidelines, will be submitted as part of each
applicant's packet.
__i. Applications will be submitted with the documents previously
mentioned in this checklist placed in the order they are
mentioned (i.e., the first item in an applicant's packet
will be the completed privacy act statement and the last
item will be the essay.
2. Basic Guidelines.
a. Take the time to read all the instructions carefully and check your work thoroughly before submitting your application.
b. Competition will necessarily be keen. Therefore we recommend that every effort be made to insure that all documents, prepared by the applicant, be error free.
c. All applicants will submit an essay as part of their applications. In three hundred words or less, the applicant will describe how being a soccer referee has had an effect on his/her life. This essay will be typewritten and double-spaced. Neatness, grammatical accuracy and creativity should be given particular emphasis in the preparation of this essay.

- Principal purpose: to obtain information from AAYSA scholarship applicants.
- Routine uses: To be used as the basis for evaluating student applicants in order to determine who is best qualified to receive AAYSA scholarships. AAYSA scholarships are awarded based upon the evaluation of the whole person (i.e., not just academic performance).
