Program:
Wednesday, Feb. 10th, 7:30 p.m.
McLean Community Center
Competition, guest judge Marti Belcher.
Marti is an adventurer, a lover of color, culture and the exotic. Finding snippets of these various pieces of life in strange corners of the world, brings joy. She admires beauty on the surface but is ultimately drawn to the beauty within all of us. The emotional meaning of a small gesture can be profound; caught by the camera, it can often change the world’s view of a people.
The phrase, ‘the human condition’ is used to describe poignant photographs of people that live in distant places. What Marti has come to understand is that all of us are examples of the human condition, wherever our sod hut, farmhouse or estate may be. Her portraits and photography will always be about our similarities, not our differences.
Marti was born on her grandfather’s dairy farm in upstate New York. Her parents, Eleanor and Percy, made TV antennas for a living. She has come to realize that the tranquility of agrarian life, the nitty-gritty of the factory environment and now, the speed and sterility of the age of technology, has blessed him with an uncommon vantage point.
Marti was always a curious child and remains forever a student. In 1981, she decided to move to Northern Virginia to complete her education at Georgetown University. Her time at Georgetown afforded him another opportunity for growth and new perspectives.
In 1999, she left her position with the federal government and went back to school, again. She started studying photography in 2003 as a graphic design student. She knew that she had finally found my creative mechanism and has never looked back . . .
Examples of Marti’s work in 2009:
Autumn Juried Show, Hampshire County Arts Council, Romney, WV
Open Juried Exhibition, Bruce Gallery, Edinboro, PA
‘Layers’, Fredericksburg Art Center, Fredericksburg, VA
‘29th Spring Contest’, Photography Forum Magazine, Finalist

Things are very informal -- please do not wait for an invitation. For example, in the section for “Upcoming Exhibitions, Workshops, Events”, if something should be added, changed, or dropped, just send an e-mail to .
Gary Oddi has been exploring a software program called Pictures to Exe (PTE). Exe is the Windows file extension to indicate that it is a computer program that can be executed/run. You can burn slideshows onto DVD-video disks, create HD video files, publish slideshows on YouTube, video for iPhone, and iPod. Can be routed to an HD TV.
The Web site is: http://www.wnsoft.com. Their forum is a link top right on this site If there is interest in this topic, Gary might be able to do a meeting on this. Lots of ideas at: http://www.beechbrook.com/pte.

Upcoming exhibitions, workshops, events:

Special full day photography workshop to benefit the Joseph Miller Center for the Photographic Arts:

Mollie Isaacs and Mary Lindhjem, of Awake The Light Photo Tours and Workshops, will give a special in-depth photography workshop on Saturday March 13, 2010.

The workshop will cover two main areas:

1. Creativity and improving your photographic techniques for macro, scenics and landscapes, wildlife, and abstracts. Learn new ways to use shutter speeds, aperture, panning, cropping, and more to add creative and artistic looks to your work. Learn how to develop or enhance your own style. This workshop will enable you to think outside the box, and will help you create more artistic and creative images.

2. Use of Photoshop, Lightroom, and HDR (high dynamic range) to enhance your images so that they look natural and not overworked. While we are undoubtedly in the digital age, the judicious use of digital tools in the post-production process can improve your images without introducing an artificial look. Learn powerful techniques to add impact, sharpness, contrast, and a full range of tones while maintaining the integrity of the original image.

WHEN: 10 am to 4 pm, Saturday, March 13, 2010.

WHERE: The Joseph Miller Center for the Photographic Arts, 4811 Catharpin Rd., Gainesville, VA

Bill Folsom workshops at Meadowlark

Goto http://www.wfolsom.com/LESSONS/classes.html to see Bill Folsom classes dealing with the key elements of photography. Introductory classes are offered aimed at beginners; those classes provide a very gentle overview of all aspects of photography in a 1 to 2 hour lecture. Intermediate classes help beginners to understand the basics of photography (lighting, equipment, composition) and are also helpful to those who wish to become better photographers. Some of the advanced classes can also be taken by beginners once they have some experience in photography. Advanced techniques, such as understanding aperture, shutter speed, and exposure are useful for those who wish to advance beyond the "point-and-shoot" style of photography. If the weather cooperates, classes frequently head outside to photograph in the Gardens for an hour or so after each class.
