Dave Rutt will host 13 bands in Forest City. Donna Angell and Dan Djuren will be the clinicians.
Andrew VanHoorweghe - There was not enough interest to have a site in Grundy Center.
Tara Smith in Barnum will be on February 24th. The Deadline is January 17th.
6. Research and Development (Matt Herrick) – NO REPORT
7. Mentorship (Leon Kuehner) - There are 33 first year teachers in the state of Iowa this year. Eight of them are in the NCIBA District. They are: Aaron Anderson in Mason City, Ben Byersdorfer in Meservey-Thornton, Ryan Luhrs in Northwood-Kensett, Wayne Lu in Eldora-New Providence, Katie Slack in Dike-New Hartford, Jill Dempster in North Central, Sarah Wright in N.E. Hamilton, and Heather Husk in WCL-Titonka. An IBA Fall Symposium was held on October 29, 2005, sponsored by IAAE and Music Mentors of Iowa. Hopefully this will be an annual event. Scholarships for first-year band directors to attend the 2006 IBA Conference will be available through the IA Dept. of Ed. Lee Nelson will come into your school and observe you teaching for a day. There will be a Mentorship Luncheon in the Presidential Suite at the IBA Convention on Thursday, May 11th.
8. Fall Cruise (Dan Djuren) – will be Wednesday, September 6th, 2006.
- Concert Band Affairs (Jeff Kirkpatrick) – is the arm of NCIBA to the state. Check the website for the prescribed music list. You must submit the request for a non-list song by February 1st, with a copy of the score, a recording of the song, and rationale behind it.
10. Marching Band Affairs (Curt Klein) – Survey to schools to find a way to help schools that participate in State Contest. New Judges training will come up at the next state meeting.
11. Jazz Band Affairs (Nate Benzing) – Iowa Jazz Championships is late this year because of Lion King. There will be only 60 bands competing this year, instead of the 75 in the past.
12. College Affairs (Dan Cassady) – NO REPORT
13. HS Honor Band (David Kovarna & Tony Brezina) – Conductors this year are Dan Cassady and Rod Chesnutt. Thanks to John Klemas for hosting. Clarinet sections were not filled this year due to lack of nominations. Only 38 schools submitted nominations for this year’s honor band. We had 45 two years ago and 51 six years ago. WE NEED TO FIND OUT WHICH SCHOOLS ARE NOT PARTICIPATING.
14. HS Jazz Festival (Roger Steig) – 18 bands competed this year – 7 in 1A, 5 in 2A, and 6 in 3A. The quality of Jolesch Photography is slipping. Thanks to the directors for very mature bands. There were five judges again this year. They were: Joe Overton – Eddyville, Jay Nugent – Simpson, Pat Kearney – Johnston, Dave Camwell – Simpson and Joel Poppen – Ankeny. $1440 in entry fees were collected. The cost of the contest was 1848.41. The attendance suffered due to the weather. $439 was taken in at the door (down about $300). The net was only $30.19 in the black. The one time expense for 5 tape recorders for the judges and the rate change of $175 (.35/mile) instead of $150 (.20/mile) took away some of the profits. The contest is still in the black and gives the most bang for the buck. The date of the 2006 Festival will be on December 2nd. The entry fee deadline will be on October 9th. If you would like a reminder email about the entry fee deadline, contact Roger Steig this spring and he will put you in a grouping to send out to you.
15. Karl King Scholarship (Russ Kramer) – There were 5 applicants this year. 1st place goes to the Percussionist from Mason City. 2nd place goes to the Flutist from Humboldt. 3rd place goes to Spencer Dunlap of Mason City. Thanks to all who tried out. Thanks to the judges – John Aboud, Ann Kostelnick, and Jeff Kirkpatrick, also.
16. Webmaster (Andrew VanHoorweghe) – Updated piece by piece. Forms and Dates are up.
17. Public Relations/Nominations (Mary Jean Nederhoff) – Area Nominees for: K.L. King Active – Mike McEinery, K.L. King Retired – Frank Dahn. Make sure you send in your ballot! Reggie Schive will be in the Hall of Fame. If anyone has an outstanding administrator to nominate, please do so.
- Student Affairs (Brad Sexe) - NO REPORT
- IBARD (Jerry Jimmerson) – NO REPORT
IV. Old Business
- Adjudicator/clinician/director fee schedule. NCIBA already pays $15 over the state fee. IHSMA $175 for a full day and $131.50 for a half day. Mileage is $.30/mile. We will move up if the state moves up.
- Continued Support of IAAE – YES! – The check is in the mail! $1000 donation to IAAE is given annually from NCIBA. The best is to divide the payments up into two $500 payments. Each payment can be sent after the honor bands.
- Directors completing 30th year teaching in Iowa. Info to Kent Wesselink.
- Retiring Directors/Tenure awards. Info to Kent Wesselink by March 31 so they can be recognized at IBA convention.
- Support and mentorship of our New Directors.
- IBA Dues increase to develop a risk contingency fund. – Raise IBA dues $5 per year for 10 years to create a $75,000 risk contingency plan. Put money in a trust vs. buying insurance.
V. New Business
Rus Kramer is proposing a High School Concert Band Clinic similar to other districts (ie – SCIBA). The cost would be around $100 per band. There would not be any sight reading. NIACC would be willing to host (depending on the chosen date). John Klemas has volunteered his services as a FREE judge. The 2nd weekend in March is a possible date – on the Friday and the Saturday to avoid other events. There was a lot of interest verbally shown. This clinic would have no contest implications – aka – NO RATINGS! Jeff Kirkpatrick motioned to check into the potential dates via email and for directors to consult their school calendars. Nate Benzing seconded.
Leon Kuehner addressed the ‘Academic Eligibility’ policy, known as ‘NO PASS, NO PLAY’, by the IHSAA. The HISSA (Speech) has already voted to do the same as the Athletic Assoc. The IHSMA has three possibilities on how this can turn out. Option 1 – Keep it the way it is/no change. Option 2 – Do whatever the Athletic Assoc. does. Option 3 – No Pass, No Play. Each HS Principal will be given a chance to vote on what to do. Leon K. and John Aboud think IHSMA runs a ‘Festival Series’ not a competition. In the next few weeks the IHSAA will vote and then the IHSMA will decide what to do. “This is a political issue, not an educational issue” Be sure to go to the meeting at the IBA Conference. A lot of this issue will come down to ‘local control’ for home town concerts.
September 23rd, 2006 will be the 3rd Annual Marching Clinic in Fort Dodge.
Sandi Willman pointed out mistakes in the Spring Bulletin regarding Classification – 1A vs 2A.
John Aboud cautioned everyone to watch what you say about the ‘odd brand’ instruments.
VI. Announcements
Stop by and say ‘Hi’ to the vendors that came to the HS Honor Band - Riemans and Kepharts. Thank them for the munchies.
Celebration Iowa Jazz Band Position is open for this summer.
Thanks to Dave Kovarna, Tony Brezina, and John Klemas for a successful day.
Curt Klein made a motion to adjourn at 2:24. Nate Benzing seconded. Carried Unanimously.
